This research deals with the theme of ‘extramarital relationships,’and it will examine the changes in Korean society’s perception of ‘sexuality’through the TV series On the Way to the Airport. On the Way to the Airport is about a love based on comfort and empathy that develops between Sooah Choi (played by Haneul Kim), a mother of a 12year old girl and an experienced stewardess of 12 years, and Dowoo Seo, a professor of architecture who sincerely cares for his stepdaughter Annie. Both Sooah’s and Do～woo’s families are bereft of familiarity, and they both have partners who lack the ability to see other peoples’perspectives. So they find sentimental communion in each other, which makes up for the emotional deficiencies in their marriages , It is noteworthy, however, that their relationship remains platonic. In other words, their relationship could be described as an ‘emotional affair.’Interestingly, Sooah and Dowoo, who try fiercely to preserve their own families, become attracted to each other through paternal and maternal affection, which is the very thing their partners lack. The ending of On the Way to the Airport where Sooah escapes the patriarchal family structure and finds her own independent life aims to express a post～modern value; however, the TV series simultaneously reflects its modern paradigm by pining for a stable familial structure in its portrayal of the familiarity and empathy between Sooah and Dowoo, and also by portraying Hyewon and Jinseok, who reject the archetypes of maternal and paternal affection, in a negative manner. This enlightens the ethical values of the show’s viewers, while making room for viewers to accept Sooah and Dowoo using those enlightened ethical values. The sentiment between Dowoo and Sooah, whose mutual attraction results in an extramarital relationship, is founded on familial love rather than sexual lust, which prevents their relationship from being condemned either as extreme good or extreme evil. This moral ambivalence is a key factor in On the Way to the Airport’s popularity with its viewers. Furthermore, On the Way to the Airport uses the beautiful natural environment to construct metaphors for the relationships between the characters and increase viewer empathy. This technique creates a ‘Sense of Place’ the landscapes that metaphorically represent individual characters form the necessary conditions for the love to cometrue. This evokes a sentimental response in viewers, affirming the relationship of Sooah and Dowoo in the TV series.

본 연구에서는 반사회적인 제재인 ‘혼외관계’ 모티프를 다루면서 수용자들에게 공감멜로라는 긍정적 평가로 화제가 집중된 TV 드라마 『공항 가는길』을 통해 우리 사회의 가족문화와 성 담론의 변모양상에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 『공항 가는 길』은 이 시대 가족의 의미를 묻는 드라마다. 이 작품에서 혼외관계는 모성애・부성애를 부정하고 가족을 와해시키는 장애물이라기보다는 가족의 참의미를 강조하고 우리 사회의 달라진 세태를 반영하는 요소라할 수 있다. 또한 자기계발만이 최고의 가치로 간주되는 신자유주의 맥락에서 과거 ‘영혼의 위안처’로서의 가정이 자녀의 계층을 유지・상승시키기 위해 남편의 경제력과 아내의 정보력을 바탕으로 한 중산층의 사교육 프로젝트로 집중되는 현실을 비판적으로 그리고 있다. 『공항 가는 길』은 혼외관계지만 서로에게 끌리는 도우와 수아의 절제된감정이 성에 대한 매혹보다는 가족애에 기반하고 있다는 점에서 이 둘의 관계를 선/악의 어느 한 쪽의 잣대로 매도할 수 없게 만든다. 이는 『공항 가는길』이 수용자에게 호감을 얻을 수 있었던 중요한 이유로 작용한다. 또 하나 『공항 가는 길』의 공감 포인트는 수려한 풍경을 등장인물의 캐릭터, 관계성을 강화하는 장치로 추동하여 판타지적인 로맨스를 완성하고 있다는 점이다. 이는 일종의 ‘장소감’(Sense of Place)으로 이 작품에서 둘의 사랑이 이루어져야만 하는 필요조건을 형성한다. 이를 통해 두 사람의 친밀감이더해지는 흐름이 형성되어 수용자의 공감대를 자아내는 데 긴요한 장치가되고 있다. 이렇듯 『공항 가는 길』은 이 시대에 다양하게 나타나는 가족문화와 성 담론의 변화 지점을 포착하여 설득력 있게 그려낸 작품이기에 수용자들의 공감을 얻을 수 있었다. 또한 사회적 트라우마에 우회적 말 걸기를 시도하는문화적 기능을 수행하는 의미 있는 작품이라 할 수 있겠다. 따라서 본 연구는 혼외관계 소재를 다룬 TV 드라마를 통해 급변하는 한국사회의 성 담론, 가족 문제와 그 해법, 문화적 분열과 변화 속에서 우리 사회가 숙고해야 할방향성을 규명해 보고자 하였다.
