This dissertation is based on the content, construction, and the motif of the seven texts from “A Wenny Old Man(Hokburi Yeonggam)” which was a part of the investigation report of chosun legends and fairy tales. The report was concluded as a result of the project called ‘Nationwide Excavation of Folk tales of Joseon Dynasty Conducted,’ which was nationally conducted under the supervision of Japanese Government-General of Korea in 1913. Moreover, with the fairy tale’s constructing process not being fully clarified, the aim of this study is to discover facts related to the matter. The information collected from the early Joseon dynasty, in 1910, provides a variety range of contents and motifs that are connected to the construction of the modern version of “A Wenny Old Man.” First, those texts are a ‘story of Joseon,’ collected from a research based on the genre recognition about ‘fairy tale.’ There was an opinion denying the existence towards the identity of the fairy tale since the fairy tale was used to emphasize the ideology Japan had when colonizing Korea. The texts from the investigation report of chosun legends and fairy talesclarify that “A Wenny Old Man” is a story of Joseon. Secondly, The texts are being implemented in various variations narrative. Therefore, it can be an object of comparison about the adaptation aspect of the “A Wenny Old Man.” Compared to the texts of Dakahasi Doru(高橋亨) and Korean Textbook(『普通學校朝鮮語及漢文讀本』), which were mobilized by Japan in the same period, based on this possibility, and it was able to partially revise and supplement the discussion of the existing. Lastly, based on the story of “A Wenny Old Man” that was reported in Gyeonggi-do Pungduck-gun, ‘Jangseung(Korean tradition totem pole)-types’ story which is one of the story of “A Wenny Old Man” generated discussions. ‘Dokkaebi(Korean tradition goblin)-types’ stories were selected, used by Japan, and received academic attention. Unlike the ‘Dokkaebi-types’ stories, ‘Jangseung-types’ story has been forgotten by people even though it is one of the “A Wenny Old Man.” ‘Jangseung-types’ stories will attract people who are in the field of studying and creating “A Wenny Old man” since it has traditions and cultural original form of Korea. It is difficult to deny that the modern version of “A Wenny Old Man” has been utilized in ideology of colonialism and colonial policies of Japan. However, it should not be denied that this story has existed as an ancient story that has been brought to our private sector. The unfortunate historical-cultural damages “A Wenny Old Man” conceived when it was being rephrased into a folk tale should be faced straight forward, and the identity of “A Wenny Old Man” needs to be mended when we revise it into the story of our own. It is the responsibility of our generation to dig out new materials such as the investigation report of chosun legends and fairy tales, confirming the identity of our own stories from the past, and pass them down to the new generation as touching and interesting stories. Theses are the purpose of having discussions about the formation process of the modern story of “A Wenny Old Man.”

본고는 1913년 조선총독부가 실시한 전국적인 조선 전설・동화 조사 보고서에 수록되어 있는 7편의 혹부리영감 텍스트들에 대하여 내용 및 구성과 중요 화소를 살펴보았다. 그리고 이들 텍스트의 양상 및 의미를 바탕으로 하여 아직 제대로 해명되지 않고 있는 혹부리영감 전래동화의 형성 과정과 관련된 몇 가지의 논점을 고찰하였다. 1910년대 초반의 조선 민간에서수집된 조선 전설・동화 조사 보고서의 혹부리영감 텍스트들은 매우 다채로운 특징을 보여주고 있기 때문에 근대 혹부리영감 전래동화의 형성 과정에 대한 논의와 관련하여 시사하는 점이 많은 자료다. 이 자료들을 논구한 결과 아래와 같은 사실을 확인할 수 있었다. 첫째, 이 텍스트들은 실제의 조사 과정에서 ‘동화’라는 장르 인식을 바탕으로 수집된 ‘조선의 이야기’라는 점이다. 기존의 우리 학계에서는 혹부리영감 이야기가 일제의 식민주의 이데올로기 강화에 동원된 사실이 뚜렷하기 때문에 이 이야기에 대해 우리의 옛날이야기라는 존재성 자체를 부정하는 견해가 있기도 했다. 조선 전설・동화 조사 보고서의 텍스트들은 혹부리영감 이야기가 ‘조선의 이야기’라는 사실을 명백하게 드러내고 있다. 둘째, 이 텍스트들은 다양한 변이형의 서사로 구현되고 있기 때문에 혹부리영감이야기의 개작 양상에 대한 비교 대상으로서의 가능성이 크다는 점이다. 이가능성에 근거하여 동시대에 일제에 의해 동원된 다카하시 도루의 텍스트나 보통학교 조선어 교과서의 텍스트와 비교한 결과, 이들 두 텍스트의 개작 양상에 대한 기존의 논의를 부분적으로 보완하거나 새로운 의견을 제시하였다. 셋째, 경기도 풍덕군에서 보고된 혹부리영감 이야기에 의해 이 이야기 유형의 하나인 ‘장승형’에 대한 논의를 이끌어낼 수 있다는 점이다. ‘도깨비형’ 이야기가 일제에 의해 적극적으로 선택・활용되고 많은 학술적 관심을 받은 것과 달리 ‘장승형’ 이야기는 우리에게 점차 잊혀져 온 혹부리영감 이야기다. 우리의 민속과 문화 원형 요소가 뚜렷한 장승형 이야기는 혹부리영감 전래동화의 연구 및 창작에서 더욱 주목되어야 할 것이다. 근대 혹부리영감 이야기가 일제의 식민지 정책과 식민주의 이데올로기에활용된 사실은 부인하기 어렵다. 그렇다고 하여 이 이야기가 우리의 민간에전래되어 온 옛날이야기로서의 존재성을 갖고 있다는 사실이 부인되어서는안 된다. 혹부리영감 이야기가 전래동화로 형성되는 과정에서 생겨난 불행한 역사적・문화적 환경의 상처를 직시하고, 이를 우리 민족 고유의 이야기로 되살리는 그 정체성의 치유가 필요할 것이다. 조선 전설・동화 조사 보고서와 같은 새로운 자료의 발굴과 이에 대한 연구를 통해 우리 옛날이야기의 정체성과 원형성을 확인하고, 이를 오늘의 우리 어린이들에게 재미있고감동적인 이야기로 들려주어야 할 책임이 우리에게 있다. 이것이 근대 혹부리영감 전래동화의 형성 과정에 대한 논구가 지속적으로 지향해야 할 지점으로 생각된다.
