The fourth industrial revolution (4IR) which is driven by Artificial Intelligence (AI), robot technology, 3D printing, Internet of Things (IoT), etc., is transforming people’s lives in various fields. In EFL learning and teaching, AI-based technologies are also widely being used in and out of classrooms. As many EFL learners are now relying on those technologies, they might not feel the need for teachers and/or classroom learning altogether in the near future. In addition, as many native speakers of English (NES) instructors have been responsible for teaching general English courses at Korean universities, they are very much concerned that they could eventually lose their jobs and be replaced by AI. Given these circumstances, a preliminary study will be needed to see how they perceive general English education in Korea in the 4IR and the use of AI. The perceptions of 11 NES instructors who are teaching in a general English department at a Korean university were investigated. A survey questionnaire which includes Likertscale, Yes/No, multiple-choice, short answer, and open-ended questions was provided, and the data were analyzed via discussions of four researchers. It was found that the instructors thought that speaking-oriented courses would be the most important in the future, and they could be of great help in teaching culturally and socially appropriate English. They also believed that they could play important roles of enhancing students’ motivation and confidence, monitoring and guiding students’ learning, and teaching “real” English which AI cannot do. Moreover, they admitted the fact that they could not prevent their students from using AI-based translation applications. However, they argued that they would need to incorporate those applications into teaching and provide proper guidance to their students. Implications and limitations of the study are included.

인공지능, 로봇공학, 3D 프린팅, 사물인터넷 등이 주도하는 4차 산업혁명은 여러 분야에 걸쳐 인간의 삶을 바꾸어가고 있다. 영어를 외국어로 배우고 가르치는 분야에서도 인공지능을 기반으 로 한 기술은 현재 교실 안팎에서 활발히 적용되고 있다. 많은 영어학습자들이 이러한 기술을 점 차 더 신뢰함에 따라 앞으로 실제 교실에서의 학습의 필요성을 느끼지 않게 될 가능성도 있을 것 으로 보인다. 따라서 대학 교양영어교육의 존속을 위해 한국 대학에서 교양영어 교과목의 많은 비 중을 담당하고 있는 원어민 교사들이 4차 산업혁명 시대의 한국 교양영어교육에 대해, 그리고 인 공지능 사용에 대해 어떻게 생각하는지 알아보고자 하였다. 본 사례연구에서는 한국의 한 대학에 서 교양영어과목을 가르치고 있는 11명의 원어민 교사들의 인식조사가 이루어졌다. 리커트 척도, 예/아니오, 다중 선택, 단답형, 개방형 질문을 포함한 설문조사가 진행되었고, 답변 내용은 네 명의 연구자들 간 논의를 통해 분석되었다. 그 결과 원어민 교사들은 영어 말하기 중심 과목이 앞으로 도 가장 중요하게 가르쳐져야 할 것이며, 문화적/사회적으로 적합한 영어를 사용하게 하는 데에 있 어 그들이 중요한 역할을 할 수 있을 것으로 생각하고 있었다. 또한, 학생들의 동기를 강화하고 자 신감을 높이는 한편, 그들의 학습과정을 주시하며 길잡이 역할을 해줌과 동시에 인공지능은 결코 할 수 없는 실생활 영어를 가르쳐줄 수 있는 역할을 해낼 수 있을 것이라 믿고 있었다. 나아가 인공 지능을 기반으로 한 번역기 애플리케이션 사용과 관련해서는 제재보다는 이를 제대로 사용할 수 있도록 지도하는 것이 필요하다고 주장했다. 본 연구와 관련하여 제언과 한계점이 포함되어있다.
