Along with , , , and , was written at the end of the seventeenth century which also served as the foundation of expansion of our ancient fictions. Of these, was especially well-liked by women and lower class folks as it was more folky and progressive, setting focus on a lovers’ quarrel and refuting the social system of patriarchy and gender discrimination. This is also evident from the fact that the contents of can be found in , , , , and . Then again, for some time, the value of the fiction was underestimated by those who adversely understood the fantasy or unrealistic aspect of the story. This paper was attempted to demonstrate the effect of on the ensuing fictions to divulge the significance of the story in the history of fiction writing. As a result, it was disclosed that certain segments or units of the story were featured in , , , , , , , , , and . These are only the ones that I could personally read over and I believe there are many more works that were influenced, either directly or indirectly, by . The plot of includes diverse and fascinating elements including the hardships of the female protagonist, salvations made by numerous gods, love and ordeal between the male and female protagonists, vivid description of the heavens, social conditions in late Joseon dynasty, heartfelt display of the psychology and emotions of those alienated, and braking down the barriers. It can be safely assumed that these complex intersections were the very reason why the story was more enjoyed by most people. As many of the fictions from this time feature a number of these elements, it won’t be a stretch to claim that retain all of the characteristics and values of our ancient fictions. By this paper, I hope that the effect of is more widely and deeply studied to ascertain its true value and significance in the history of fiction writing.

<숙향전>은 <구운몽>, <사씨남정기>, <창선감의록>, <소현성록> 등과 함께 17세기 말에 창작되었으며, 이들 작품과 함께 우리 고소설이 본격적으로 발전하는 데 근간이 된 작품이다. 특히 <숙향전>은 신분의 차이에 따른 남녀의 애정 문제를 주요 갈등으로 설정한 가운데 남녀의 차별과 절대적 가부장권에 대해서도 이의를 제기하는 등 민중적․진보적 성향이 강한 작품으로, 조선 후기 부녀자와 하층민들에게 대단한 인기를 끌었다. 이는 <춘향전>, <심청전>, <배비장전>, <봉산탈춤>, <성주풀이>, <화전가> 등에 <숙향전>과 관련된 내용이 삽입되어 있다는 것을 통해서도 알 수 있다. 그런데 한동안 다대한 환상성이나 비현실적인 측면을 부정적으로 이해한 결과 <숙향전>의 가치와 소설사적 의의가 평가 절하되는 경향이 있었다. 이에 본고는 <숙향전>이 후대 소설에 미친 영향을 논증함으로써 <숙향전>의 소설사적 의의를 다소나마 드러낼 목적으로 시도되었다. 그 결과 <숙향전>은 개별 화소와 사건에서부터 인물 형상과 구성, 선계의 형상과 세계관 등 다양한 측면에서 후대소설에 영향을 미쳤다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 여기서 고찰 대상으로 삼은 작품은 <박씨전>, <육미당기>, <쌍주기연>, <김원전>, <장경전>, <금방울전>, <소대성전>, <남윤전>, <적성의전>, <김진옥전> 등인데 이들 작품은 필자가 개인적으로 인지한 작품에 한정되어 있는바, 실제로는 훨씬 더 많은 작품들이 직․간접적으로 <숙향전>의 영향을 받았을 것으로 추정된다. <숙향전>은 여주인공의 고난과 여러 신령들의 구원, 남녀주인공의 사랑과 시련, 선계의 모습에 대한 생생한 형상, 조선 후기 물정과 세태의 사실적 반영, 소외된 인물의 심리와 정서에 대한 곡진한 표출, 경계 허물기와 동일시의 서사 등 실로 다양하면서도 흥미진진한 요소가 매우 많다. <숙향전>이 조선 후기에 널리 향유되었던 것도 이들 요소가 복합적으로 작용한 결과라고 할 수 있다. 또한 후대의 많은 고소설이 이들 요소 가운데 일부를 차용하고 있는바, <숙향전>은 우리 고소설의 특질과 가치를 全有하고 있다고 해도 과언이 아닐 것이다. 이 논문을 계기로 <숙향전>이 후대의 고소설에 미친 영향이 더욱 폭넓고 깊이 있게 고구되어 <숙향전>의 소설사적 위상과 의의가 제대로 밝혀지길 기대한다.
