This study empirically examines the simultaneous causation between trade agreements and militarized disputes among states during the period of 1950-2000. Theories of international relations (IR) argue for the causal relations among diverse areas of cooperation and conflict in the international system. For example, commercial liberalism (or commercial peace theory) in IR provides theoretical arguments that economic cooperation leads to military cooperation; (neo)functionalism argues for the spillover effects of cooperation, especially from economic to non-economic areas. This research provides empirical evidence for the arguments posed by those IR theories, finding that trade agreements and militarized disputes simultaneously catalyze each other. Not only do trade agreements between states deter the onset of militarized disputes, but militarized disputes also deter signing of trade agreements among states. This study also provides empirical evidence that the models of militarized disputes and trade agreements suggested in this research improve our understanding of both phenomena. New militarized dispute and trade agreement models in this study statistically outperform or have greater explanatory power than previous empirical models on the topic. Finally, this study provides policy implications for extending economic cooperation to secure military cooperation and vice versa (e.g., the need for economic cooperation between North and South Korea to ease military tensions on the Korean peninsula).

본 연구는 국가 간 무역협정 체결과 군사분쟁 발발의 상호인과 관계를 계량적으로 검증하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 국제정치학의 이론적 논의는 다양한 영역에서의 국가 간 협력과 갈등의 인과성에 관하여 논거하고 있다. 예를 들어, 상업 자유주의(혹은 상업 평화론) 논의는 국가 간 경제협력이 군사협력으로 이어지는, (신)기능주의 논의는 다양한 영역에서의 협력확대 경향(특히, 경제협력에서 비경제협력으로)의 이론적 기반을 제공하고 있다. 1950년부터 2000년까지 국가 간 무역협정과 군사분쟁의 자료를 활용한 분석결과는, 이러한 협력의 인과관계에 관한 국제정치이론 논의의 경험적 증거를 제시한다. 기존 군사분쟁 계량연구에서 논의되었던 국가 간 경제적 상호의존과 함께, 다양한 무역협정의 체결은 군사분쟁의 발발을 억지한다는 결과를 본 연구의 계량분석은 증거하고 있다. 본 연구는 무역협정 변수의 중요성과 함께, 무역협정 변수를 활용한 연구모델이 기존의 군사분쟁 연구모델과 비교하여 설명력의 우월성이 있음을 보여주고 있다. 또한, 본 연구는 무역협정이 군사분쟁을 억지하는 인과성과 함께, 군사분쟁 발발이 무역협정 체결을 억지하는 무역협정･군사분쟁 상호 인과관계(혹은 경제협력･군사협력 상호 인과관계)의 분석결과를 제공한다. 마지막으로, 본 연구는 경제협력의 확대를 통한 군사협력 강화, 군사협력에 기반을 둔 경제협력 확대에 관한 정책적 시사점(예, 한반도 긴장완화를 위한 남북 간 경제협력 확대의 필요성)을 제공하고 있다.
