There are two different ways which is the Kim, Malbong's first novel between 'Millim' or 'Jjilrekkot'. 'Millim' is the right one to track writer's critical mind and view of the world because it has Kim, Malbong's main issues after liberation such as thoughts, sin and salvation of human, humanism issue included complex story line, affection, and desire. The world of ideology that Dongseop has aimed is dark human desired world that has planned and confidentially chased. Both Jakyung's selfishness who pursuit their own happiness turning back from contradiction and Changsoo's selfishness who instigate people with heroism that covered personal desire for class and ethnicity are masked heretic members of Dongseop's point of view. Showing the other side of too much positive and firm value, their world is the same as the common customs that operate with selfish desire. Sangman's story that sustained axis of popular nature shows a bad guy who follows success and material desire, but being a bad guy includes naked fists against the fate which is tied up his life. The procedures of Sangman's being a bad guy is not originated but socially effected. Even though it is criticized, getting out of weak position describe common customs with a pity and compassion's point of view. Novel 'Millim' that is the writer's greatest first step work to understand human and society through personal desire presents human society in Chosun Dynasty which is one of jungle and beasts(Yoo, Dongseop, Seo, Jakyung, Oh, Sangman) in the jungle live, die, fight, and love each other. This novel seriously researches about nature desire of human which penetrates two different human group and subjects duty of humanism as presenting a appropriate result with pitying attention about characters who damage human nature.

김말봉 문학의 첫출발을 『밀림』으로 하느냐,『찔레꽃』으로 설정 하느 냐에 따라 이후 김말봉의 소설 세계는 전혀 다른 방향으로 해석될 수 있 다. 『밀림』은 복잡한 구성과 애정과 물욕 외에도 사상의 문제, 인간의 죄 와 구원, 휴머니즘 문제 등 해방 이후 김말봉 소설의 주요 쟁점들이 씨앗 처럼 뿌려져 있어 작가의 문제의식이나 세계관을 역추적하기에 합당한 작품이다. 동섭이 지향한 ‘주의자’의 세계는 계획적이고 은밀하게 추구되는 어두 운 인간 욕망의 세계였다. 세상의 모순에서 등 돌리고 자신들만의 행복한 삶을 추구하는 자경‘들’의 이기성이나 개인적 욕망을 계급성, 민족성으로 포장한 채 영웅주의로 대중을 선동하는 창수‘들’의 이기성, 동섭이 보기에 그들은 모두 가면을 쓴 이단자들인 것이다. 가장 긍정적이고 확고하리라 믿었던 가치(사상성)의 이면을 보여줌으로써 이들의 세계가 이기적 욕망 에 의해 작동되는 세속(世俗)과 다르지 않다는 사실을 통해 진정한 인간성 에 대한 물음을 역설적으로 제기한다. 통속성의 축을 지탱하는 상만의 서사는 출세, 물질적 욕망으로 점철된 시대적 악한의 모습을 보이지만 상만의 악한 되기는 자신을 옭아맨 운명 에 대적하는 맨주먹 정신이 녹아있다. 상만의 악인화 과정은 태생적인 것 이 아니라 사회구조적 측면이 강하고 사회적 지탄을 받더라도 약자의 위 치에서 벗어나고자 발버둥치는 모습이 통속성의 이면을 바라보는 연민과 동정의 시선으로 그려진다. 『밀림』은 인간 사회가 하나의 밀림이라는 것, 밀림과도 같은 조선 사회 를 그 속에 살아가는 온갖 짐승들을 통해, 살고 죽고 싸우고 사랑하는 짐 승들(유동섭, 서자경, 오상만 등)의 개별 욕망을 통해 살펴보고 인간과 사 회를 이해하고자 했던 작가의 원대한 이상이 첫출발되는 작품이다. 이항 대립적인 두 부류의 인간군을 역설적으로 관통하는 인간의 가장 원초적 인 욕망에 대해 진지하게 탐구하였고 그 욕망에 붙들려 인간성을 훼손하 는 인물들에 대하여 연민적 시선과 함께 당위적 결말을 선사함으로써 휴 머니즘의 당위성을 주제화하였다.
