In this research, we analyze related documents from local and foreign sources to compose a guide of Korean professional competency standards for music therapists. We referenced the Spencer & Spencer (1993) competency model used by the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA), the competency qualifications proposed by the Occupational Information Network (O*NET) as sponsored by the US Department of Labor/Employment and Training Administration, various precedent research regarding local music therapist job responsibilities and requirements, and curricula of the five available music therapy graduate programs at local universities. We deduced a compilation of fundamental skills from the gathered information and constructed a conclusive outline of professional competencies for music therapists with the review and verification of a panel of experts. The complete competency standards are categorized into three general divisions (theoretical groundwork, job performance, personal aptitude), 14 subdivisions (understanding of music as a tool for therapeutic treatment, of principles and procedure of therapy, of music therapy, of patient relations, circumstantial treatment goal planning, treatment design and application, treatment assessment, documentation, communication, interdisciplinary collaboration, administrative work, professional obligations and ethics, self introspection and development, attitude and self-concept), and 48 specifications.

이 연구는 국내․외 관련문헌을 분석하여 국내 음악치료사의 전문 역량요소를 탐색하는 것이다. 이를 위해 Spencer & Spencer(1993)의 역량모형에 근거하여 미국음악치료협회(AMTA)의 전문 역량, 미국 직업정보네트워크(O*NET)에서 제시한 음악치료사 역량, 국내 음악치료사 직무 및 역량에 관한 선행 연구와 국내 5개 음악치료 대학원의 교육과정을 분석하고 1차 전문 역량을 도출하였다. 도출된 내용을 전문가집단이 타당도 검증을 실시하였다. 최종 3개 역량군(이론기반 역량군, 직무수행 역량군, 개인적 역량군), 14개 역량요소(치료의 도구인 음악에 대한 이해, 치료의 원리·과정에 대한 이해, 음악치료에 대한 이해, 치료 대상자에 대한 이해, 사정 및 치료목적·목표 설정능력, 치료 계획 및 적용능력, 치료 평가 능력, 문서화 능력, 의사소통 능력, 학제간 협력 능력, 행정업무 능력, 전문가적 책임 및 윤리의식, 성찰 및 자기개발, 태도 및 자아개념), 48개 세부역량요소를 도출하였다.
