This paper aims to explain the art and ethics of East Asian people by reviewing the comparison of Korean, Chinese, and Japanese personalities or characteristics. It is often said that comparative research is given to the comparison of two items. However, the comparison of the three items like the culture of Korea, China, and Japan is not so simple. It is necessary to temporarily establish a criterion or scale and then discover its personality, finding a degree of difference depending on where each is located among its coordinates. So, researchers need to review the human characteristics of the three nations and the ideas referenced in their art forms in more depth. And then, from there, the standard for comparison is based on which they can estimate and measure the difference. The Korean personality and art has been discussed intermittently under topics such as ‘Korean’, ‘Korean Disease’, ‘Korean Aesthetic Consciousness’ and ‘Korean Consciousness Structure’. To further deepen such discussions, it is necessary to look into the three nations in detail, depending on the presence of certain consciousness and items. Our thoughts were preoccupied with the notion of uniqueness and originality that existed only in our country. We need to recognize from a more open point of view that what we don't have - or lack - can be characteristic and what we have can share with our neighbors. We ask that the work should have ‘decency’ or dignity for a masterpiece worthy of the annals of art. Similarly, we are required to have dignity in our lives. When we compare Korean, Chinese and Japanese personalities and art from a macro-positional point of view, we can finally explore ways to utilize the system of decency. In other words, when comparing the personalities of the three countries, the standard of comparison will result in the concept of the type of decency that was addressed in the theory of personality or art. I think the consciousness and preference for the type of decency in human personality and art will be the meaningful result of comparison.

이 논문은 한국 중국 일본의 인성과 예술에 대한 비교고찰을 통하여, 동아시아인의 예술과 윤리의식을 해명할 것을 목적으로 삼는다. 흔히 비교고찰을 행한다고 할 때 양자의 비교를 염두에 둔다. 하지만 한·중·일과 같은 삼자의 비교고찰은 그리 단순하지가 않다. 어떤 기준이나 척도를 잠정적으로 마련한 다음, 각각이 그 좌표 가운데 어디에 위치하는가에 따라 정도의 차이를 발견하면서 그 특징을 찾아낼 수밖에 없다. 한국인의 심성과 예술에 관해서는 ‘한국인’, ‘한국 병’, ‘한국인의 의식구조’, ‘한국인의 미의식’ 등의 논제 아래 산발적으로 논의해 왔다. 이러한 논의를 한층 더 심화 시켜나가기 위해서는, 한·중·일 삼국에 특정 의식이나 사항의 유무에 따라 세밀하게 살펴볼 필요가 있다. 우리는 오랫동안생각은 우리나라에만 있는 것이 고유성이고 독창성이라고 하는 사고에 갇혀있었다. 좀 더 열린 시각에서 우리에게 없는 것, 즉 결여된 것도 특색일 수가 있고, 또 이웃 나라와 함께 공유하면서도 그 특색을 드러낼 수 있다는 점을 인식할 필요가 있다. 우리들은 예술사에 이름을 남길만한 걸작이라면 그 작품에 품격이 있을 것을 요구한다. 이과 마찬가지로 우리들의 생활에도 품격이 있기를 요구한다. 우리가 한·중·일의 인성과 예술을 거시적인 관점에서 비교 정리한다고 할 때, 결국 ‘품격론’의 체계를 끌어들여 활용하는 방법을 모색해 볼 수 있다. 다시 말해 한·중·일 삼국의 성격을 비교할 경우, 비교의 잣대는 인물론이나 예술론에서 다루었던 품격의 유형 개념으로 귀결될 것이다. 한·중·일이 지향하는 예술과 인간의 품격에 대한 의식과 그 선호는 의미 있는 비교고찰의 성과가 될 것이다.
