The purpose of this article is to reveal the value–oriented conclusion and examples which implicit in Zhu Xi’s theory of qi (氣). The theory of Zhu xi’s qi is that everything in the world has its concreteness through qi. It seems very complicated because it starts with the cosmology and expresses a multi-layered pattern in the end. The pattern which is replaced by the theory of mind and ethics. When it comes to the problem of setting the relation between qi and li through cosmological ontology, it seems more complicated. However, the relationship between qi and li which comes first or later, in Zhu Xi’s thought system more focus on what is better than which is more fundamental in the cosmological ontological dimension. That is to say, in Zhu xi’s theory of liqi (理氣), the relationship between li and qi go beyond the time and the logical order. They revealed as a value line which is the “front” as good and the “back” as bad. The cosmological concept qi is divided into qizhi (氣質), qipin (氣品) and qixiang (氣象) on the Zhuziyulei (朱子語類) and finally it is considered to be aesthetic value. Qixiang (氣象), as an aesthetic value, means beauty of peronality. Qixiang makes shift one’s disposition from the “murky” to the “clear” state and it is a boundary and a goal for becoming sage. Zhu xi emphasizes a personal boundary of sage in Confucianism which is personified of benranzhixing (本然之性) through shengxianqixiang (聖賢氣象) which includes zengdianqixiang (曾點氣象), yaosunqixiang (堯舜氣象), and shengrenqixiang (聖人氣象). Especially in Confucian thought, the ‘good’ is not just interpreted as an ethical value ‘good’ but the ‘good’ as an aesthetic value, in other words, it is one of the aesthetic characteristics which reduced as a ‘beauty’. Zhu xi stresses the term shengxianqixiang (聖賢氣象) which implies zengdianqixiang (曾點氣象) would be a typical example of that.

이 글의 목적은 주희의 기론이 내포하는 가치론적 귀결과 그 실례를 밝히는 데 있다. 세계에 존재하는 모든 것은 기(氣)로부터 그 구체성을 갖게 된다는 주희의 기의 이론은 우주론에서 시작해서 심성론 윤리론 등으로 치환되는 다층적 양상을 나타내기 때문에 상당히 복잡하게 보인다. 무엇보다 리(理)와의 우주론적 존재론적 관계문제를 먼저 살펴봐야 한다는 점에서 더욱 복잡하게 다가온다. 하지만 주희의 사유체계에서 기와 리의 선후 관계의 문제는 단순히 어떤 것이 더 근원적인가하는 우주론적 존재론적 차원을 넘어 어떤 것이 더 ‘좋은 것’인가와 상관된다. 리기론에서 리와 기의 선후 관계는 시간적 선후를 넘어서, 또한 논리적 선후 등을 넘어 가치론적 선후, 즉 좋은 것으로서의 ‘앞’과 나쁜 것으로서의 ‘뒤’로서 드러난다. 『주자어류(朱子語類)』에서 보면 우주론적 ‘기’ 개념은 ‘기질’, ‘기품’을 비롯해서 ‘기상(氣象)’ 개념으로 분화되어 최종적으로 미학적 가치로 환원된다. 미학적 가치로서의 ‘기상’은 인격미를 뜻한다. ‘기상’은 다소 ‘탁한’ 기질을 ‘맑은’ 기질로 바꾸는 것, 즉 성인을 지향하는 데 있어서의 목표이자 경지이다. 주희는 ‘증점의 기상(曾點氣象)’을 비롯해서 ‘요순의 기상(堯舜氣象)’, ‘성인의 기상(聖人氣象)’ 등을 포괄하는 ‘성현의 기상(聖賢氣象)’이라는 범주화된 표현으로써 본연지성의 의인화라고 할 수 있는 유가적 성현의 인격적 경지를 강조한다. 유가적 사유에서 특히 ‘선’은 단순히 윤리적 가치로서의 ‘좋은 것’을 넘어 미적 가치로서 ‘좋은 것’, 다시 말해 ‘아름다움’으로 환원되는 미적 속성 가운데 하나인데, 주희가 강조하는 ‘증점의 기상’을 포함한 ‘성현의 기상’이 바로 그러한 전형적 사례이다.
