This article mainly uses literature studies to critically review the hypothesis of John Hick's religious pluralism(his understanding of god, salvation, christology, etc.), and also for the question as to how Early Christianity has grown and developed with uniqueness and differentiation among the pluralistic situation that was present. We try to understand and criticize the hypothesis of John Hick's religious pluralism with the point of view to his hypothesis as a composition based on religious plurality within the transition to the age of pluralism, and on his personal experience in multi-religious reality. Within the state of pluralism, early Christianity has changed its state from religio illicita to religio licita, and did not become a sect of Judaism. We base on this historical fact to criticize and review whether the pluralistic change in situation, which is the basis of John Hick's hypothesis, would indeed recognize religious pluralism as truth. We examine how Christianity has become distinctive in the context of emperor worship, various ceremonies in GrecoRoman religion, oriental mysticism, Greek philosophy and situation of diversity in religious heresies. By doing so we expect establishing Christian identity and witnessing evangelical truth in the current age of postmodernism in bold humility, integrity, and simplicity. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to ensure the validity and possibility of the mission among the current situation of religious plurality, and therefore expect to contribute in enabling field missionaries as well as local church pastors, seminary students, and the laity, to respond confidently to the challenge of religious pluralism.

필자는 존 힉(John Hick)의 종교다원주의 가설을 몇 가지로 나누어 제시하고, 그에 대해 비판적 고찰을 통해 선교 사명은 여전히 유효하며 수행해야 할 과제라는 선교신학적 의의를 제시하려고 한다. 존 힉을 비판하는 전개는 그의 종교다원주의 토대가 되는 다원주의 상황변화가 과연 종교다원주의를 진리로 인정하게 되는지에 대한 검토를 초기 기독교가 다원주의 상황에서 유대교의 한 분파로 전락하지 않고, 더 나아가서 불법종교(religio illicita)가 합법종교(religio licita)로 변화한 역사적 사실을 토대로논증하려고 한다. 황제숭배와 그리스-로마의 다양한 종교 제의, 동방의 신비주의, 그리스 철학과 다양한 이단들의 종교 다원화 상황 가운데서 기독교가 어떻게 차별성을 갖게 되었는지를 살펴봄으로써 현대 포스트모더니즘 시대 속의 기독교 정체성 확립과 복음진리 증거를 담대하면서도 겸손하게(bold humility) 추진해 나갈 수 있을 것으로 기대한다. 존 힉의 종교다원주의 신론, 구원론, 기독론과 다원주의 인식론을 보여주는 세 가지 비유를비판적으로 제시한다. 따라서 본고의 목적은 종교다원화 현상 가운데서도복음증거의 타당성과 가능성을 담보하는 것이며, 이를 통해 현장 선교사는물론 지역교회 목회자와 신학생, 그리고 평신도들이 종교다원주의의 도전에 확신 있는 응답을 가능하게 하는 데에 기여하리라 생각한다.
