YongSeong led the Korean Buddhist circles as a presentative Seon Master of the 19th century and expressed his enlightenment in various ways. His edification developed into practical outcomes such as translations, writings, and missionary works. In religious propagation, communication is a precondition. Focusing on this point, this paper attempts to understand YongSeong’s achievements from the perspective of communication. Specifically, this paper explores his early work, the Gwiwonjeongjong. The Gwiwonjeongjong is the first written work that refutes the defamation of Buddhist doctrines by other religions, which is also regarded as YongSeong’s first book with the obvious intent of communicating with people. The use of sophisticated logical structures, rhetorical situations, and expressions makes it easy to observe the elements of persuasive communication in his message. Thus, this paper analyzes the structure of the Gwiwonjeongjong by adapting the theory and methodology of ancient rhetoric and persuasive communication. Based on this analysis, the author found that the exquisite persuasive structures that appeared in the Gwiwonjeongjong allow it to be effectively persuasive. YoungSeong’s success is due to his efforts to actualize his enlightenment within the logical frameworks of Sutra. He develops his logic, not for himself, but to save all sentient beings. Considering this purpose different from that of common logic, he assuredly succeeds in expressing the Buddha’s communicational point of view. In addition, he reveals his own perspective on Seon communication with trans-logicality. As an attempt to modernize his enlightenment, this analysis is far from being complete but is worthy enough to provide a new way of sharing it. Research on YongSeong’s perspectives of communication will certainly contributes to our lives and practice by providing practical guidelines and instructions.

근대 한국 불교계를 선도했던 용성선사는 다양한 분야에서 실천 교화행을 펼쳤다. 이러한 깨달음의 실천적 전개 이면에는 소통과 공유가 일어나는 커뮤니케이션 과정을 전제하는데 본 논문에서는 이러한 점에 주목하여 용성의 다양한 행적 중 저술활동에 한하여 이를 커뮤니케이션 측면에서 고찰해보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 그의 최초기 저술에 해당되는 『귀원정종』을 연구대상으로 하였는데 『귀원정종』은 타 종교의 비방에 대한 교리논박서로서 논리적인 체계와 수사학적 표현법을 활용함으로써 일반 대중과의 커뮤니케이션 의도를 분명하게 드러내고 있어 설득커뮤니케이션 요소가 강하게 나타나고 있다. 이에 본론에서는 수사학과 현대 설득커뮤니케이션 이론들을 적용하여 『귀원정종』의 설득커뮤니케이션 구조를 분석하고 이를 바탕으로 그의 커뮤니케이션 관점을 고찰해 보았다. 이와 같은 분석에서 『귀원정종』은 체계적이고 정교한 설득 구조를 보여주고 있으며 각각의 구성요소에 따른 효과적인 설득을 구현하고 있다. 이러한 체계적인 설득 구조는 용성이 그의 깨달음을 점검하고 전달하기 위해 여러 경론을 열람하고 그 이론들을 활용하여 사상적 체계를 구상하는 과정에서 비롯된 것으로 볼 수 있는데 중생 교화의 방편이라는 점에서 일반적인 형식 논리와는 목적을 달리 한다. 이런 점에서 그는 붓다의 커뮤니케이션 관점을 계승하고 있으며 또 한편으로 유형의 논리를 넘어서는 선적 커뮤니케이션도 함께 보여주고 있어 논리적 체계의 활용과 함께 그만의 커뮤니케이션 해석 관점을 살펴볼 수 있다. 이러한 연구는 용성의 깨달음을 현대적인 이해의 장으로 이끌어내고자 하는 시도로서 그의 깨달음을 현재에 공유할 수 있는 통로 역할을 할 수 있다. 이를 위해서 전체적인 용성 커뮤니케이션에 대한 연구가 진행되어야 할 것으로 보이며 현재 수행과 포교에 적용될 수 있는 이론 모형과 실질적인 지침 개발도 이루어져야 할 것이다.
