This paper presents an investigation into Lee Yeo-bak’s viewpoint of waterwheels. Lee Yeo-bak was a Silhak scholar from Gangjin, JeollaProvince. Being influenced by hisfather, he took interestin Western study at anearly age and later conducted research on western-style waterwheels. Western-style waterwheels were recorded in Western books published by European missionaries at the end of the Ming Dynasty. They were then introduced to Joseon. Lee was devoted to research about Yongmicha, a type of Western-style waterwheel. Yongmicha was a water pump that drew water from the bottom to the top. This design was definitely needed in Joseon. The topography included many rice paddies located higher than rivers. Lee carried out research and development for Yongmicha based on his highly advanced math knowledge including geometry. He manufactured and operated these types of waterwheels in Yeongwang and Seoul. He insisted on the widespread use of these waterwheels.

이 논문은 전라도 강진 출신의 실학자 李如樸의 水車觀에 해 연구한 것이다. 그는 부친의 영향을 받아 일찍부터 서양학문에 관심을 갖고 서양식 수차를 연구하였다. 서양 식 수차는 명나라 말기에 유럽 선교사가 편찬한 西學 서적에 수록되어 조선에 소개되었 다. 이여박은 서양식 수차 가운데서도 龍尾車 연구에 매진하였다. 용미차는 물을 아래에 서 위로 끌어올리는 양수기로써, 논이 강물보다 높은 곳에 있는 우리나라 지형에서 그리 고 논이 많은 전라도 지역에서 꼭 필요한 것이었다. 그래서 이여박은 기하학을 포함한 고도의 수학 지식을 토로 용미차를 연구·개발하여 영광과 서울에서 제작·가동한 후 널리 보급할 것을 주장하였다.
