The Korean immigrant society in New York began to be formed in earnest in the early 1970s following the amendment of the US immigration law in 1965. The history of the Korean immigrant society in New York can be said to be the history of Korean American social organizations in New York. Since the creation of the New American Association of New York Association in 1960, more than 1,000 Korean organizations and associations have been active in the New York metropolitan area in 2017. As the Korean-American society developed through the stabilization period of immigration and the period of immigration settlement, its social character changed. In addition, according to the changes in the social character of Korean American society, the Korean American community needs the different social organizations by each period. In this paper, we examine the relationship between the changes of Korean NGOs / NPOs and the changes in the social character of Korean American society. We also point out the problems of Korean civic groups and propose the use of Wikipedia as an action strategy for Korean social organizations with future prospects.

1965년 미국 이민법 개정에 따라 1970년대 초반부터 본격적으로 형성되기 시작된 뉴욕 한인 이민사회의 역사는 뉴욕 한인 사회단체의 역사라고도 할 수 있다. 1960년 뉴욕 한인 회 (New American Association of New York Association)가 창설된 이후로 2017년 현재 약 1,000여 개의 한인 단체 및 협회가 뉴욕 메트로폴리탄 지역에서 활동하고 있다. 한인사회가 이민 정착의 시기를 거쳐 생활의 안정기를 지나 발전하면서 그 사회적 성 격이 변화했다. 또 한인사회의 사회적 성격의 변화에 따라 각 시기별로 한인사회가 필요 로 하는 한인 단체들의 모습도 달라지는 것을 볼 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 이들 뉴욕 한인 시민단체들(NGO/NPOs)들의 변화와 한인사회의 사회적 성격의 변화의 상관관계를 살펴보고자 한다. 또한 한인 시민단체들의 문제점을 지적 하고 향후 전망과 함께 한인 시민단체들의 활동전략으로써 위키백과의 활용을 제안하고자 한다.
