- This exploratory study illustrates the perceptions of Korean Chinese by Korean immigrants in the United Sates. By content analyzing anonymous online posts and comments from two popular Korean-language websites in the U.S. (MissyUSA.com and HeyKoreans.com), it captures two distinctive discourses formed by Korean immigrants regarding Korean Chinese. On one hand, some Korean immigrants actively distance themselves from Korean Chinese by stressing subgroup differences in terms of language, identity, and mindset. They refuse to see Korean Chinese as “real” Koreans, and thus, they do not perceive them as being their equals. On the other hand, other Korean immigrants emphasize similarities they find between Korean and Korean Chinese immigrants and express sympathy and solidarity. It is noteworthy that a recurring discourse among these positive perspectives was the emphasis placed on their shared marginalized social status in the U.S. society, which may contribute to blurring the boundary between the two groups of Koreans, and ultimately expand the scope of“ Koreanness” among ethnic Koreans abroad.

- 본 연구는 미국에 거주하는 한국 이민자가 조선족에 대해 어떻게 인식하고 있는지 보여준다. 필자는 재미 한국 이민자들이 널리 이용하는 웹사이트 두 곳 (MissyUSA.com, HeyKorean.com)의 게시글과 댓글의 내용을 분석함으로써 재미 한국 이민자의 조선족에 대한 시각이 두 가지 상반된 형태로 크게 나뉨을 발견하였 다. 재미 한국 이민자가 보여준 첫 번째 시각은 조선족과의 거리를 유지하며 자신과 동등한 대상으로 바라보려 하지 않는 것이다. 이에 속하는 재미 한국 이민자들은 자 신과 조선족 간의 언어, 정체성, 사고관의 차이를 강조함으로써 조선족을 ‘진정한’ 한국사람으로 받아들이기를 거부했다. 두 번째 시각은 조선족과의 동질성을 강조하 며 연대감을 형성하는 것이다. 여기에서 특히 강조된 동질성은 혈통, 언어, 문화 외 에도 미국사회 안에서 소수민족으로서 함께 느끼는 자신들의 위치였다. 이러한 재 미 한국 이민자의 시각은 장차 재미 한국 이민자와 조선족 간의 구분짓기를 약화시 키고, 흔히 제한된 의미로 사용되어 온 한인 혹은 한인다움(Koreanness)의 범위를 확장시키는 데에 긍정적인 영향을 줄 것이다.

- 140여개 국에 분산된 세계 한민족을 연구 대상으로 하고 이들 재외동포의 역사, 사회 문화 등의 모든 현상을 연구하고 재외 동포들의 경제생활 법적 문제 등을 연구함을 목적으로 한다. 따라서 재외 한인 연구회는 그 기반이 사회과학 인문과학 전 분야에 해당한다. 재외한인학회는 사회과학 인문과학의 모든 분야 학자들이 어느 나라에 거주하는 동포이건 관계없이 우리 동포를 연구 대상으로 한 학자들이 모임으로 회원들간의 상호 관심분야를 토의하고 상호 자료를 교환하여 각자의 연구 시야를 확대하고 학제간의 연구를 통하여 재외한인 연구의 진일보를 그 목적으로 한다. 더 나아가 한인 동포를 연구한 외국 학자와 긴밀한 연계를 갖고 공동 연구를 추진한다.
