Wonhyo’s Hwajaeng thought in general emphasizes harmonizing all the different or disputing thoughts in the Buddhist schools. Hwajaeng thought sublate struggle and argument. It places importance on compromise, tolerance, and sincere communication with others. From this point of view, Hwajaeng thought has a close association with peace education that focuses on the formation of peace culture through communication. In this regard, this study aims to consider the Wonhyo’s Thought of Hwajaeng and to draws the implications that Wonhyo’s Thought of ‘Hwajaeng’ gives peace education. For this, First, this study reviews the background and character of Hwajaeng. Second, this paper consider the logic and the methods of Hwajaeng presented by Wonhyo. Third, this study inquire the implication of Wonhyo’s Thought of Hwajaeng for Peace Education. This paper presented overcoming verbal hallucination, forming a harmonious one beyond recognition, Free from extreme attachment to own perception of a person and extreme attachment to own position, an integrated approach to cognition and emotion based on accepting the partial truth of each opinion.

원효의 화쟁사상은 일반적으로 서로 대립하는 견해들을 조화･통일시킴으로서 다툼을 없애 고 의견을 통합하는 사상으로 이해되어 왔다. 따라서 원효의 화쟁이론은 다툼과 언쟁을 지양한 다. 그것은 타인과의 타협과 관용, 그리고 진실한 소통을 중시한다. 이러한 점에서 볼 때 화쟁사 상은 대화를 통한 평화문화 형성에 중점을 두는 평화교육과 밀접한 관련성을 갖는다. 이러한 문제의식을 토대로 이 연구는 원효의 화쟁사상이 평화교육에 주는 함의를 도출하는데 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해 이 연구는 첫째, 화쟁사상의 등장 배경과 특성을 검토하고, 둘째, 원효가 제 시한 화쟁의 논리와 방법을 고찰하였다. 셋째, 화쟁사상이 평화교육에 주는 함의를 언어 환각 에서의 탈피하기, 차이 인정을 넘어 조화로운 하나 형성하기, 인집(人執)과 법집(法執)에서 벗 어나기, 일리(一理)를 전제한 리(理)와 정(情)의 통합적 접근으로 분류하여 제시하였다.
