This study introduces an example of interdisciplinary course in oral history and theater held at K University. Wol-Wall Festival was run by Lee Hae Kyoung, a professor of theatre from 2009 to 2011 in Bukjeong village in Sungbuk-dong. I also took part in the festival as a historian. In the festival, the residents of Bukjeong village themselves became actors and performed a play representing their own life histories. As a project of saving the Yeomcheon bridge handmade shoes street in 2017, the oral history and the theater were combined together through a resident-participatory interdisciplinary course. In this interdisciplinary class, the life histories of shoemakers in Yeomcheon bridge area were recorded and the historicity of the Yeomcheon bridge area was explored along with the history of handmade shoes. The results of the course were published as a book of oral life history. And some of the shoemakers played the role of themselves in a play representing their own life histories. This interdisciplinary course confirmed the positive effects of combination of oral history and theater. The problem that the interviewee is alienated from his or her oral data could be overcome in this way. If the method of communication in oral history focuses on story rather than letter, the interviewees who have been objects of the researchers could become active subjects who tell their own stories.

이 연구는 K대학교에서 진행한 구술사와 연극의 융합수업의 사례를 소개한 것이다. 2009~2011년 성북동 북정마을 월월축제는 연극학과 이혜경 교수가 주도하고 역사학자인 필자가 보조적으로 참여하였다. 이 축제에서 북정마을 주민들의 생애사는‘마을’이라는 공간에서 ‘마을 사람들’이 참여하여 연극으로 재현되었다. 2017년 염천교 수제화 거리 살리기 프로젝트에서는 역사(구술사)와 연극이 지역참여형 융합수업을 통해서 본격적으로 결합하였다. 이 융합수업에서는 염천교 지역의수제화 장인들의 구술 생애사를 채록하는 작업과 함께 염천교라는 공간의 역사성과수제화의 역사가 함께 탐구되었다. 수업의 결과는 구술 생애사 자료집으로 발간되었고, 주인공인 장인들의 참여하에 생애사 연극으로 공연되었다. 이 융합수업은 연극과 구술사가 결합될 때 가져오는 많은 긍정적인 효과들을 확인시켜주었다. 그 중 구술자가 구술 자료로부터 소외되는 문제를 극복할 수 있다는 것은 주목할 점이다. 문자 중심에서 이야기 중심으로 구술사의 소통방식이 전환되면 그동안 연구자들의 구술 대상이 되어온 구술자들이 스스로 자기 이야기하는 능동적 주체로 변화될 수 있는 가능성을 말해주기 때문이다.
