In the rapidly changing social trend, critical thinking, creative thinking, communication skills, and comprehensive problem-solving skills are needed instead of accumulating knowledge. is a newly developed interdisciplinary liberal arts subject to this trend of the times. This study is to read Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein in the “Thinking and Expression” lecture, to reflect on humanistic subjects in the work and to express our own thoughts about it. The goal of this course is threefold. The first is to have the opportunity to read the texts of the rich humanistic reflections that have been handled in individual studies by applying them to Thinking and Expression. Secondly, we want to critically examine the text instead of reading the book uncritically, thereby developing the power of thinking. The third is to embody our reflections through the work of language expression of writing or speaking. With this purpose, we tried to reflect on some of the topics in the work and summarize our thoughts about them. First, we asked whether the human desire for infinite creation, especially the desire for the creation of human life, is a blessing or a disaster. Second, we read the argument of the creature and Dr. Frankenstein and thought about which position we stand for. And from the standpoint of the monster, we thought about whether the revenge for unjust treatment is legitimate. We also thought about the dilemma between love for a single person and love for the entire human race. Finally, we tried to reflect on the meaning of the work dealing with death, fear, and misery and expressed our thoughts.

<사고와 표현>은 오늘날 급변하는 사회 흐름 속에서 대학 교양교육에서도 지식의 축적 대신 정보와 자료의 홍수에서 중요한 것을 선별해내고 기존 지식을 융합하는 비판적, 창의적 사고와 의사소통 능력, 종합적 문제해결능력을 기를 수 있도록 해줄 수 있는 학제적, 다학문적 접근이 절실해지면서 새롭게 만들어진 교양과목이다. 본 연구는 <사고와 표현> 강의에서 메리 셸리의 『프랑켄슈타인Frankenstein』을 중심으로 문학 텍스트를 읽고 작품 속 다양한 인문학적 문제들을 성찰하고 그 과정과 결과를 글과 말로 표현하는 사고-독서-표현 통합 학습의 한 사례를 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 본 강의 과정에서 주안점을 두고자 한 점은 첫째, 개별학문에서 다루어온 무궁무진한 인문학 성찰을 담은 텍스트를 기초 교양인 <사고와 표현>에 활용하여 학생들에게 작품 속 사유읽기의 기회를 제공하는 것, 둘째, 무비판적으로 책을 읽는 대신 풍부한 인문학적 사유가 담긴 텍스트를 비판적으로 접근하고 성찰적으로 음미하는 과정을 통해 깊이 있는 사고의 힘을 키워가게 해주는 것, 셋째 글쓰기나 말하기의 언어 표현하는 작업을 통해 자신의 성찰을 구체화하는 사고활동을 강화하고자 하는 데 있다. 이러한 목적을 두고 우리는 수업에서 작품 속 몇 가지 사유의 축을 중심으로 성찰해보고 그에 대한 자신의 생각을 정리해보았다. 첫째, 인간의 무한한 창조에의 욕망이 과연 축복인지, 재앙인지의 질문을 던지며 오늘날 급속하게 발전하는 과학문명, 그 중에서도 인간과 같은 존재의 창조에 대한 근본적인 성찰을 보았으며, 둘째, 괴물과 프랑켄슈타인박사의 논쟁을 음미해보며 괴물의 요구와 프랑켄슈타인의 거절 중 어느 입장을 지지하는지에 대해 생각해보았다. 그 외에 괴물의 입장에서 억울하게 배척당한 부당한 대우에 대한 복수가 정당화될 수 있는지, 프랑켄슈타인이 처한 한사람에 대한 사랑과 전체 인류에 대한 사랑 사이의 딜레마의 문제도 제기해보았다. 마지막으로 행복을 바라는 인간이 죽음과 공포, 불행을 다루는 작품을 창작하고 또 읽는 이유는 무엇인지에 대해 성찰해보고 생각을 표현해보았다.
