As liberal course has been established for students to accumulate the basic refinement as modern people equipped with the correct world view and healthy values, proper education should be provided. Liberal art course is composed of art majors and students with diverse majors. As the existing liberal art course has focused on the understanding and appreciation, it should be expanded to the expression area called “creation” based on the understanding and appreciation. This study aimed to be helpful to form the correct values, by focusing on the improvement of creativity, satisfaction, and achievement through creative activity. Targeting 130 students of liberal art course in H university from the 2nd semester of 2016 to the 1st semester of 2017, they learnt the concept and history of portrait and diverse portrait works by artists, and then they went through the process of understanding and appreciating these works. Through the creative process of producing portraits by objectifying themselves, it aimed to be helpful for them to have a chance to look themselves back, to introspect themselves, and to emotionally empathize/understand each other.

교양수업은 학생들에게 올바른 세계관과 건전한 가치관을 지닌 현대인으로서의 기본 소양을 쌓을 수 있도록 개설 된 만큼 그에 합당한 교육이 이루어져야 한다. 본 연구는 교양 미술과목의 수강생들은 미술전공자 뿐만 아니라 다양한 전공의 학생들로 구성 되어 있다. 그 동안의 교양미술과목은 이해와 감상에 초점을 두어 진행되었다면, 이해와 감상을 바탕으로 표현영역, 즉 “창작”으로 확장시킨다. 지식 전달도 중요하지만 창작활동을 통해 창의력을 향상시키고, 만족감과 성취감을 느낄 수 있도록 하는데 초점을 맞추어 올바른 가치관을 형성하는데 도움이 되고자 하였다. 연구기간은 2016년 2학기부터 2017년 1학기까지 H대학 교양 미술수업을 듣는 학생 130명을 대상으로 진행되었다. 자화상의 개념과 역사, 작가들의 다양한 자화상 작품 등을 선행한 후 이들 작품을 이해하고 감상하는 과정을 거쳤다. 자신을 객관화시켜 자화상을 제작하는 창작과정을 통해 학생들이 자신을 돌아보며 자아성찰의 시간을 갖고, 학생들이 정서적으로 서로 공감하고 이해하는데 도움이 되고자 했다.
