The purpose of this study was to investigate roles and assignments of school counseling for facilitation of character education implementation in school setting. For this purpose, the background of character education highlight was examined. After reflecting real facts in current school education, the concepts and directions of character and character education were examined. The suggested roles of school counseling for effective implementation of character education are character education facilitation based on student development features, character education facilitation systematically integrated into entire areas of student development, facilitation of morality enhancement as the core of character, facilitation of developing various and important characters, and facilitation of developing character capacity. The suggested assignments of school counseling for effective implementation of character education are school counseling research and practice for facilitating prevention and development of all students, paradigm change from punitive guidance to restorative life education, post-traumatic growth & resilience enhancement, developing character capacity through coping resources building based on positive emotion, and developing teachers’ character education capacity. Finally, the necessity of empirical-scientific character education researches and practices were discussed along with research assignments of elementary school counseling.

본 연구에서는 학교교육 장면에서 바람직한 인성교육 실현을 촉진하기 위한 학교상담의 역할과 과제에 대해서 탐구하였다. 이를 위해 먼저 오늘날 우리 사회에서 인성교육이 강조되어 온 배경을 살펴보고, 우리 학교교육의 실상을 성찰한 후, 인성과 인성교육의 개념 및 방향을 알아보았다. 학교 인성교육의 효과적 실현을 위한 학교상담의 역할로 학생발달 특성에 기초한 인성교육 촉진, 학생 발달의 전 영역에 체계적으로 통합되는 인성교육 촉진, 인성의 핵심인 도덕성 증진의 촉진, 인성의 주요 내용인 품성의 계발과 발달의 촉진, 인성역량의 계발과 발달의 촉진 등의 역할이 제시되었다. 인성교육 실현을 위한 학교상담의 과제로 모든 학생을 대상으로 예방과 발달을 촉진하는 상담의 연구와 실천, 처벌적 생활지도에서 회복적 생활교육으로의 패러다임 전환, 외상 후 성장 및 회복탄력성의 증진, 긍정 정서 기반 대처 자원구축을 통한 인성역량의 증진, 교사의 인성교육 역량의 증진 등의 과제가 제시되었다. 마지막으로 경험 과학적이고 체계적인 인성교육 연구와 이에 기초한 실천의 필요성과 더불어 인성교육 실현을 위한 초등상담의 연구과제가 논의되었다.
