The welfare for the disabled in Korea officially started in 1981, when Welfare of Disabled Persons Act was established, but at that time, the policy was performed mainly with support for their life because it was the beginning of the welfare. Literature of the disabled was unnecessary luxury. In this circumstance, the disabled who performed literature activities formed Korea association of literature of the disabled in the winter of 1990, and they published 『Sotdae Literature』, which was the first literary magazine of the disabled, in the spring of 1991. The magazine has been issued for 25 years without exception until 100th issue, establishing literature of the disabled as a literature genre. This study is intended to research the birth background and the current situation of the literature of the disabled, to introduce the history of the literature of the disabled, and to comprehend what difficulties the disabled experience when they do literature activity in Korea. In addition, through the literature aesthetics that only the literature of the disabled has, the study pursues to make people sympathize with the value of the literature of the disabled and seeks for methods for disabled writers to play a role in our society with creative activity as a suggestion needed for the development of the literature of the disabled.

우리나라의 장애인복지는 심신장애자복지법이 제정된 1981년부터 공식 적으로 시작되었지만 장애인복지 초기라서 장애인의 생활에 필요한 지원 위주로 정책이 펼쳐졌다. 장애인이 문학을 한다는 것은 불필요한 사치였다. 이런 사회 환경 속에서 1990년 겨울, 문학 활동을 하는 장애인들이 한 국장애인문인협회를 결성하고 1991년 봄 국내 최초의 장애인문학지 『솟대문학』을 창간하고, 25년 동안 단 한 번의 결간 없이 100호를 발간하 며 장애인문학이 문학의 한 장르로 자리매김하였다. 본고에서는 장애인문학의 탄생 배경과 실태를 살펴보고, 장애인문학의 역사를 소개하면서 한국에서 장애인이 문학하는데 어떤 어려움이 있는지 를 밝히고자 한다. 또한 장애인문학만이 갖고 있는 문학적 미학을 통해 장애인문학의 가치에 공감하게 하고, 장애인문학 발전을 위해 필요한 제 안으로 장애문인이 창작 활동으로 우리 사회에서 그 역할을 할 수 있는 방안을 모색하고자 한다.
