Knowledge and technologies are changing rapidly in contemporary society. In order to cope with social changes actively, the members of police organizations have to manage their work more efficiently by adapting to these changes. For police officers, the way to learn usually can be divided into two types; formal learning, provided by the educational agencies of police organizations, and informal learning, learning from professional knowledge individually during every day work. Informal learning has advantages in many aspects when compared to the traditional formal learning. It gives scope to the initiative of the learner, and knowledge learned through informal learning can be applied to improve workplace performance immediately without a gap between "learn" and "do". A survey was conducted to identify types and levels of work-related informal learning for Korean police officers. The survey questionnaire was consisted of an informal learning scale and demographic items. The informal learning scale was consisted of six types of informal learning: (1) learn from peers, (2) individual learning, (3) learn from outsiders, (4) learn from new and less experienced colleagues, (5) learn together, (6) learn from expert colleagues. The questionnaires were distributed by a Google Forms link between March and May 2017. 521 police officers all over South Korea agreed to participate and answered the questionnaire. After data cleaning, 509 (97.7%) were used for analysis. All data analysis was accomplished using the SPSS 22.0-Win statistics packages. In order to answer the research questions of this study, descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean value, standard deviation), t-test analysis, one-way ANOVA analysis were used. The findings of this study were as follows: Firstly, police officers learn from their expert colleagues and peer colleagues most frequently. They also learn individually, learn together, and learn from new and less experienced colleagues. However, they learn from outsiders infrequently. Secondly, differences appeared between different groups divided by demographic items such as age, education background, police agency, rank, and tenure.

지식과 기술이 급변하는 현대사회에서 사회변화에 능동적으로 대처하기 위하여 경찰조직의 구성원들은 자신에게 주어진 직무를 효율적으로 수행할 수 있도록 새로운 지식이나 기술을 끊임없이 습득할 필요성이 있다. 새로운 지식이나 기술을 습득하는 방법은 주로 공식적 학습과 비공식학습으로 나눠볼 수 있는데 비공식학습은 공식적 학습에 비하여 학습자의 능동성을 강조하고 습득한 지식을 적시에 업무처리에 적용할 수 있는 장점을 지니고 있다. 이 연구의 목적은 한국 경찰공무원들의 업무 관련 비공식학습 수준 및 비공식학습에 대한 인식 차이를 검증하는 데 있다. 자료 수집을 위한 조사도구는 비공식학습 및 인구통계학적 특성에 대한 문항으로 구성된 설문지를 사용하였다. 비공식학습 측정도구는 연구자가 선행연구 고찰을 통하여 경찰조직에 맞는 6가지 요인인 동료학습, 개인학습, 경찰조직 외부학습, 신임경찰공무원으로부터 학습, 공동학습, 전문가학습을 추출하고 설문문항을 설정하였다. 인구통계학적 특성에는 성별, 연령, 학력, 근무기관, 계급, 재직기간 등에 관한 문항들이 포함된다. 예비조사와 본 조사를 통하여 측정도구의 신뢰도와 타당도가 확보하였다. 자료 수집은 2017년 3월부터 5월까지 전국의 경찰공무원을 대상으로 Google 온라인 설문지를 이용하여 실시하였다. 총 521부가 회수되었고 최종 509부를 분석에 사용하였다(유효응답률97.7%). 자료 분석은 Windows SPSS 22.0 프로그램을 이용하여 빈도와 백분율, 평균과 표준편차 등의 기술통계, t-검정분석, 일원배치 분산분석을 실시하였다. 연구결과로 현재 경찰조직에서 비공식학습은 이루어지고 있으며 전체적으로 양호한 수준이다. 경찰공무원들은 전문가와 동료로부터 가장 많은 것을 습득하고 있는 반면에 경찰조직외부로부터 학습하는 경우가 비교적으로 낮은 수준이다. 또한, 경찰공무원의 인구사회학적 특성에 따른 비공식학습에 대한 인식 차이가 다소 있는 것으로 나타났다.
