The purpose of this study is to find out how court cases are introduced in U. S. social studies textbooks and to examine the types of them, and to gain implications for the introduction and use of court cases in Korean social studies textbooks. As a result of this study, the way of using court cases in U. S. social studies textbooks is as follows. First, landmark Supreme Court cases related directly to the cntents of social studies textbooks are introduced and used. Second, court cases in social studies textbooks are used in various content types including texts. Third, court cases in social studies textbooks are combined with various description styles. Fourth, using court cases in social studies textbooks is linked to learning skills. Accordingly, implications of introducing court cases into Korea social studies textbooks are as follows. First, in social studies textbooks, it is necessary to spread the awareness that court cases can be applied to various learning themes. Second, it is necessary to investigate and discover landmark court cases in Korea that can be introduced into social studies textbooks. Third, it is necessary to reorganize and disseminate various types of court cases that can be used in social studies textbooks Fourth, it is necessary to introduce a variety of ways to use court cases in social studies classrooms and to train teachers on them.

본 연구의 목적은 한국 사회과 교육과정에서 판례의 활용을 직·간접적으로 적시하고 있는 만큼 판례를 풍부하게 활용하고 있는 미국 사회과 교과서에서는 판례를 어떤 방식으로 도입하고 있는지 확인하고 그 유형을 살펴보는데 있다. 이를 통하여 한국의 사회과 교과서에서 판례 도입과 활용의 시사점을 얻고자 하였다. 본 연구의 결과, 미국 사회과 교과서의 판례 활용 방식 및 유형은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 사회과 교과서 내용과 직접 관련되는 획기적인 연방대법원 판례가 도입·활용된다. 둘째, 사회과 교과서에서 판레는 텍스트를 비롯한 다양한 내용 형식에서 활용된다. 셋째, 사회과 교과서에서 판례는 다양한 진술 방식과 결합하여 활용된다. 넷째, 사회과 교과서에서 판례는 기능(skill)학습과 연계하여 판례를 활용된다. 이에 따라 한국의 사회과 교과서에서 판례 도입과 활용에 주는 시사점은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 사회과 교과서에서 판례를 직접 활용할 수 있다는 인식의 확산이 필요하다. 둘째, 사회과 교과서에 도입 가능한 한국의 대표적인 판례의 수집 및 발굴이 필요하다. 셋째, 사회과 교과서에 활용 가능한 판례를 다양한 형태로 재구성하여 보급하여야 한다. 넷째, 사회과 교실에서 판례를 활용하는 방법에 대한 소개 및 연수가 필요하다.
