In this paper, I evaluated the meaning of The Great East Asian Fairy Tales Collection (6 volumes) published in Osaka, Japan from 1942 to 1944, from the perspective of children's literature. This fairy tales collection is based on the folktales of the six East Asian countries of Indonesia, China, Malaysia, the Philippines, India, and Vietnam which were incorporated into the so-called Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. The publishing organization is Nihon Shoukokumin Bunka Kyoukai [the Japan Small Civil Cultural Association]. This association has planned the publication of the collection for the purpose of the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. Interestingly, the authors sincerely investigated the literature and oral literature data in their own way, carefully selected old stories and adapted them to fairy tales. Because of this, the collection has the aspect of an Asian fairy tales collection. This collection will be a case study that can examine the relationship between politics and literature in a particular political situation. And it is necessary to carry out research from various perspectives as the Asian fairy tales collection of the 1940s, which is a cultural scale and capacity of the Imperial Japan.

필자는 이 논문에서 1942～1944년에 일본 増進堂 출판사에서 간행된 ‘대동아권동화총서(大東亞圈童話叢書)’(전6권)를 아시아 아동문학 연구의 관점에서 조망하였다. 이 동화총서는 1941년 일본이 태평양전쟁을 일으키면서 이른바 ‘대동아공영권’으로 편입한 인도네시아, 중국, 말레이시아, 필리핀, 인도, 베트남의 6개 지역의 옛이야기들을 일본의 아동문학 작가들이 일본 아동들을 위해 선별․개작한 전래동화집이다. 간행주체는 일본소국민문화협회이다. 간행인은 일본의 아동들이 6개국의 동화를 읽고 그 나라들의 생활, 역사, 자연과 지리에 친근감을 느끼고 장차 그 나라에 진출했으면 하는 바람을 드러내었다. 작가들은 자신의 경험, 지식, 취향, 시각에 따라 각 지역에서 의미있게 여긴 고전에서 옛이야기를 선택하여 ‘동화 풍’으로 스토리텔링하여 각 나라 사람들의 생활과 역사, 문화를 표현하였다. ‘대동아권동화총서’는 특정 정치상황에서 정치와 문학 간의 역학 관계를 고찰할 수 있는 연구사례이다. 또한, 1940년대 제국 일본의 문화역량과 한계가 발현된 ’아시아동화총서’로서, 다양한 관점에서 연구를 진행할 필요가 있으며, 해당 국가의 근대 설화․동화 연구자료로 활용할 수 있다.
