Facing the Culture of Poverty - A Ethnographic Research on the Volunteering Experiences of University Students -
This article explores volunteering experiences of university students in Korea and interpretate the reflection on the experiences of university students in education service activities by ethnographic research. The researcher conducted participant observation in education service club of a university and depth interview with seven students of the club members. The domains that are a category of cultural meaning are volunteering motivation, the relationship with volunteer organization, difficulty in relation with children in poverty and difficulty in communication with club members. The main cultural themes, as any principle recurrent in a number of domains, explicit or tacit knowledge, are the pleasure by improvement of learning attitude of children in poverty, sympathy with children in poverty and one’s helplessness as volunteer & meaninglessness of volunteering. In conclusion, the researcher discusses the reflection of university students as volunteer in individualization of social responsibility.
