This essay aims at elucidating the relation between the Immediate Desire and Life in the chapter: of Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit (1807). From this effort it will be clearly come out: The object of the Immediate Desire — life (das Leben) or a living being (ein Lebendiges) — is, not as most scholars misunderstand, neither living beings that a man with self-consciousness takes as his food in order to live, nor life as biological nature, which lies under the self itself. It is rather consciousness as object-consciousness (Gegenstandsbewußtsein). Hegel points out that the object of the Immediate Desire, i.e. object-consciousness has a structure of ‘distinction in unity’, ‘unity of unity and distinction’, ‘the union of union and nonunion’, ‘the unity of differentiated and undifferentiated being’ or ‘the identity of identity and nonidentity’ and that this is just a ‘structure of life’. In order to persuasively present the actual intention of Hegel, the last part of th chapter: in Phenomenology of Spirit and moreover the process of the transition from it to the chapter: are precisely examined.

이 글의 목적은 헤겔(G.W.F. Hegel) 『정신현상학』(Phänomenologie des Geistes, 1807)의 <자기의식>장(章)에서 말하는 직접적인 욕망[die unmittelbare Begierde]과 ‘생’[das Leben]의 관계를 해명하는 것이다. 이를 통해 명확하게 밝혀지는 내용은, 특히 대다수의연구자들이 오해하고 있듯이, ‘직접적인 욕망’의 대상인 ‘생’ 혹은 ‘살아있는 것’[ein Lebendiges]은, 자기의식을 지닌 인간이 생존하기 위해서 자신의 음식물로 삼는 생명체[Lebewesen]나 자아의 근저 존재하는 생물적 자연인 생명도 아니라 대상의식으로서의 의식이라는 사실이다. 헤겔은 직접적인 욕망의 대상인 대상의식이 ‘통일 속의 구별’, ‘통일과 구별의 통일’, ‘결합과 비결합의 결합’, 혹은 ‘동일과 비동일의 동일’이라는 구조를 지니고 있으며, 이것이 바로 ‘생의 구조’라는 점을 지시하고 있다. 필자는 헤겔의 진의(眞意)를 설득력 있게 제시하기 위하여 『정신현상학』의 <힘과 지성(知性)>장(章)의 마지막 부분과, 그것으로부터 <자기의식>장(章)으로의 이행과정을 함께 면밀히 고찰한다.
