This thesis focused on studying the relationship of the Japanese naturalists and Akutagawa Ryunosuke, a leading author in the Taisho Age in Japan, who wrote 「Saihonhito」 (The Westerner) about Paul who heard voice of risen Chist. The nayuralists denied the literature production from mere imagination and fiction, but rather pursued the self-expression from reality and experience of actual human life. However, thought. Akutagawa`s who took serious view of the power of imagination did not agree with their thought. Akutagawa`s book became a sure target of criticism by the naturalists. Consequently, the conflict between Akutagawa and the naturalists was inevitable from the beginning. Eventually, Akutagawa refuted the naturalism, the main stream of the literary world in the Taisho Age when Akutagawa lived, pointing at the risen Christ who rebuked Paul, a zealot in prosecuting the Christ in his 「Saihonohito」(The Westerner) in chapter 35. Resurrection, that the naturalists were in fallacy in their view. Akutagawa disputed his critics and demanded them a convincing reason and logic behind the criticism on his point. In summary, Akutagawa confronted the naturalists in his own literature theory and defednded his stand through his unique way of using the metaphor in his works.
