- This study discusses the color senses of the Chinese reflected in characters of the Chinese language. For this study, color-related characters have been taken from the Eastern Han dynasty’s ≪說文解字: ShuowenJiezi≫ and they are put in pure and intermediate color groups. This study focused on the pure color terms. Among the pure series, shades of red are “赤”、“朱”、“红”、“丹”、 “彤”、“ 茜”; shades of yellow include “黄”、“ 褐”; and greens are “绿”、“碧” 、“翠”. Furthermore, “青”、“蓝” 、“苍” are blue shades; 白、皓、皎、素 are different whites; and 黑 、玄、幽、缁 are different shades of black. These color terms convey shades of meaning that differ from one another which, to an extent, reveal unique philosophy and ideology of the Chinese.
