The conviction of Lee Jae-yong for bribery, the removal of President Park Geun-hye from office, and the election of President Moon Jai-in look like a turning point in the Korean economy that may signal the end of the chaebol era. The influence of the chaebols may wane because the political system will no longer tolerate its abuses. A broader perspective suggests that while the chaebols may lose some of their economic and political clout in the decades ahead, any decline is more likely to be due to purely economic factors rather than political events in 2017. It is difficult for companies to retain economic dominance over time, so the economic influence of the chaebols is likely to wane because the creative destruction of a market economy will erode their economic power. The challenge for Korea is that whether institutional evolution and reforms will enable new Korean firms to challenge the chaebols, or whether global competition will displace them with firms from other countries.

최근 한국에서 일어난 삼성 이재용 부회장의 뇌물죄 유죄 판결, 박근혜 대통령의 탄핵, 문재인 대통령의 선출 등에 이르는 일련의 정치적 사건들은 한국경제에서 ‘재벌 시대’의 끝을 알리는 전환점으로 보인다. 한국의 정치제도가 재벌의 남용을 더 이상 용인하지 않게 되면서 한국경제에서 재벌의 영향력은 점점 약화될 것이다. 향후 한국 경제에서 재벌들은 정치적·경제적 영향력을 잃게 될 것이지만, 그 쇠퇴는 본질적으로 2017년에 겪은 정치적 사건들보다는 오히려 ‘경제적 요인들’에 기인할 것이다. 장기적 으로 시장경제에서 기업들이 경제적 지배를 계속 유지하는 것은 어려울 것이다. 왜냐 하면 시장경제에서 창조적 파괴가 계속됨에 따라 재벌들의 경제적 영향력은 점점 쇠퇴 할 것이기 때문이다. 따라서 한국경제는 향후 다음 문제들에 직면할 것이다. 첫째, 제도적 개선과 발전이 일어나 새로운 기업들이 재벌들에 도전하게 될 것이다. 둘째, 글로벌 경쟁에 의해 외국기업들이 국내 재벌들을 대체하게 될 것이다. 이러한 경제적 이유들로 한국경제에서 재벌시대는 끝나게 될 것이다.
