This article examines the interpretation of T'oegye Yi Hwang’s Li after the Korean liberation. The understanding of T'oegye’s Li is evaluated as a core reason that provides Korean philosophical uniqueness to the study of Confucianism in Joseon which was heavily influenced by Zhu Xi's thought. However, various opinions concerning the specific interpretation and comprehensive understanding of T'oegye’s “Li-dong”, “Li-bal” and “Li-do” have been provided. In this article, the issues between the concrete interpretations of the T'oegye’s remarks are summarized as “the problem of morality and existence”, “the problem of morality and spontaneity”, and “the problem of morality and human”. It further reaches the conclusion that the comprehensive understanding of “Li-dong”, “Li-bal” and “Li-do” results in ultimately a matter of what the core implications of the concept of T'oegye’s Li is. Based on this review, the article consequently suggests that the arguments of the Korean interpretation of T'oegye’s thought after the Korean liberation could develop into a meaningful discussion through an active consideration of T'oegye’s concept of “Heavenly Mandate”. If T'oegye’s interpretation of the heavenly mandate has a distinctive element that distinguishes itself from Zhu Xi's thought and if the concept of the heavenly mandate could contribute to a systematical understanding of T'oegye’s remarks on Li, the focus on T'oegye’s “Heavenly Mandate” could clarify the discussion of T'oegye’s thought.

이 글은 퇴계 이황의 리에 대해 해방 후 한국에서 이루어진 해석 양상을 살펴보기 위해 작성되었다. 일반적으로 퇴계학의 리 이해는 주자학에 대한 해석의 색채가 짙은 조선 유학에 한국 철학적 독자성을 부여해주는 핵심 사유로 평가받는다. 그러나 퇴계학의 “리동”, “리발”, “리도”에 대한 구체적인 해석과 종합적인 이해에 대해서는 다양한 입장이 개진되어 왔다. 이 글에서는 퇴계의 각 발언에 대해 진행된 구체적인 해석들 사이의 쟁점을 “도덕과 존재의 문제”, “도덕과 자발적, 주체적 실현의 능력(힘) 문제”, “도덕과 인간의 관계 문제”로 요약하였다. 그리고 리동, 리발, 리도에 대한 종합적 이해가 결국에는 퇴계학의 리가 갖는 핵심적인 함의가 무엇이냐의 문제로 귀결된다고 보았다. 이러한 검토 위에서 이 글은 최종적으로 퇴계학에 대한 해방 후 한국의 해석에서 발생한 쟁점이 퇴계학의 “천명” 개념에 대한 적극적인 고려를 통해 진일보한 논의로 나아갈 수 있음을 제안하였다. 천명에 대한 퇴계학의 해석이 주자학과 구별되는 독자적 요소를 갖고 있으며, 이것이 그의 리와 관련한 발언을 체계적으로 이해하는 데 기여하는 면이 있다면, 이에 대한 주목을 통해 퇴계학에 대한 논의는 보다 선명해질 수 있을 것이다.
