The insufferable gaucho(2013), a collection of five short stories and two essays and the first posthumous work of Roberto Bolaño, would be a literary testament that comprehensively covers his critical consciousness about literature and the world. This collection of short stories shares the general characteristics based on the narrative technique of the police genre and the intertextuality of the literary world of Bolaño that trace the cruel reality of the world. The tales of The insufferable gaucho show pathological diseases of the modern world through the desperate man dominated by violence, the world in decay, permanent violence, the brutality of literature and the irony between good and evil. The two essays scathingly criticize the current situation in which the mercantilism dominated the world of literature and the writers and critics lost their sociocultural role. In this way, Bolaño asks us to reflect on the deplorable world and find some remedy to cure it.

볼라뇨의 세 번째 단편집이자 첫 번째 유고작인 『참을 수 없는 가우초』는 문학과 세계에대한 그의 문제의식이 포괄적으로 담긴 문학적 유서라고 할 수 있다. 그의 작품 세계가 상호텍스트성과 탐정소설에 기초하여 잔학한 현실을 탐색하듯이, 이 작품집 또한 그러한 문학적 특징들을 공유한다. 이 작품에 포함된 5편의 단편은 폭력에 지배된 절망적 인간, 폐허로 전락한 세계, 영속적으로 반복되는 범죄, 예술의 잔학성, 선과 악의 모순적 아이러니를 그려냄으로써 근대세계에 내재된 다양한 병증을 추적하고 있다. 더불어 두 편의 에세이는 출판계의 수익지상주의, 작가정신을 상실한 문단, 그리고 사회문화적 역할을 상실한 논단의 현실을 신랄하게 비판한다. 볼라뇨는 이를 통해 병든 세계를 성찰하고 치유의 방법을 찾아야 한다고 역설한다.
