This dissertation focuses on Takamura Kotaro whose colloquial form of free verse in spoken language revolutionized the fixed form of Japanese poetic society. A close analysis of the relationship between his poems and the time of their composition reveals a variation in his poetic ideas, affected by notable experiences and revelations throughout his life. In chapter the poetic image of 『Record』 implied humanitarianism, which was different from philanthropism shown in 『Fierce animal series』 and 『Chiekosho』. The image of 150 war-involved poems in 『Record』 is in contrast with Kotaro's previous behavior, writing a poem based on humanism and organizing ‘Roman Rolland Cafe’. Kotaro suggested an artist's role during war and appealed to all of the people for joining the war. About Kotaro's war-involved poems, people say, ‘He didn't write a poem like a poem’, ‘He was forced to write such a poem under war.’ but they were not persuasive. 『Record』 was a touching record written by a man who experienced the war. Reckless war tread down human's life but it was done without criticism about a man's weakness under regime of the country. Most of Japanese critics agreed that it came from absence of wife. But those days, as many authors such as Salito Mokichi did, it was only confined to peculiar politic ground.
