The Ethics of Aristotle has been regarded as Virtue Ethics. In his ethical work, Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle insisted that the highest good, to ariston, was happiness, eudaimonia, which could be achieved only by whom had virtue, aretē. Hence, moral means virtuous by Aristotle’s virtue ethics. In this paper, that cannot be correctly and fully understood without understanding of his friendship, philia. Aristotle divided Friendship into three kinds, friendship based on pleasure, hēdonē, friendship based on usefulness, chrēsimon, and friendship on virtue. This paper will examine the meaning of friendship in Aristotle’s ethics focused on last. Friendship based on virtue, id est, friendship between good persons, hoi agathos, completes and perfects their virtues and happiness. Through friendship, the goodness of good persons will be more stable, persistent, and solid. On the contrary, their virtuous life could be fragile and wavering without friendship. Friendship can protect good person from misfortunes, difficulty, and toughness of life. It makes virtuous life more pleasant and worthwhile to living.

아리스토텔레스는 덕윤리학자로 알려져 있다. 그에 의하면 최고선은 행복이고, 행복은 덕 있는 삶을 통해서 얻을 수 있다. 따라서 아리스토텔레스가 주장하는 도덕적 삶은 덕 있는 삶이고, 도덕적인 것은 곧 덕이 있다는 것을 뜻한다. 덕이 있는 사람은 좋은 인간이므로 도덕적인 것은 덕을 갖춘 좋은 인간이 되는 것을 의미한다. 하지만 본 논문에서는 아리스토텔레스의 윤리학은 친애를 통해서 정확하게 이해될 수 있다고 주장한다. 그에 의하면 친구 없는 삶은 행복할 수 없다. 본 논문은 아리스토텔레스가 구분한 세 가지 친애 중에서 덕에 근거한 친애를 집중적으로 분석하여 친애는 덕의 완성이라는 의미를 가짐을 주장한다. 이는 덕이 행복의 필수 요소이지만 친애도 행복에 반드시 필요하다는 것과 좋은 인간에게 덕과 친애는 동전의 양면과 같다는 것을 의미한다. 덕과 친애 그리고 행복의 이러한 관계는 최선의 인간인 철학자에게도 마찬가지다.
