This study was conducted on students who attended a Japanese language class as a liberal arts course at a university in order to examine their background and perception of learning Japanese, and the results are as follows. 1) The majority of the students who attended a Japanese language class answered that they had experience of learning Japanese before, and the number of students who answered that they started to learn Japanese as they were interested in Japanese culture was the highest. 2) Most of the students answered that the level of their Japanese language skills was low. To the question about their final goal of learning Japanese, the number of students who answered that they wanted to learn Japanese until they can feel comfortable when traveling to Japan or have a daily conversation in Japanese was the highest. 3) Most of the students thought that speaking among 4 language skills is most important, followed by listening, reading and writing. The number of students who hoped the “Basic Japanese 1” class was a conversation class focusing on speaking and listening was the highest. 4) Most of the students viewed that Japanese is not a language that is difficult to learn. They also thought that if they continued to study Japanese everyday even without any special talent for learning Japanese, they could improve their Japanese skills in 2 years as long as they wanted to be good at Japanese. 5) The share of students who thought that they should study Japanese in Japan was not high, and the share of those who thought that they need Japanese teachers or friends to study Japanese was also not high. 6) Many students viewed that vocabulary acquisition is important to learn the language, and that it is important to repeat and practice a lot, and listen to audio files and practice in learning Japanese.

본 논문에서는 교양 일본어를 수강하고 있는 학습자를 대상으로 일본어 학습배경 및 일본어학습에 관한 신념에 대하여 고찰하였다. 그 결과를 정리하면 다음과 같다. 1) 교양 일본어 수강생의 과반수 이상은 이미 일본어를 배운 경험이 있는 학습자로 일본문화에 관심이 있어서 일본어를 배운다고 답한 학생이 가장 많았다. 2) 현재 자신의 일본어 능력에 관해서는 대부분의 수강생들이 [하]라고 답했으며 일본어학습 최종목표에 관해서는 여행을 갔을 때 불편하지 않을 정도로 혹은 일상회화가 가능해 질까지 일본어를 배우고 싶다는 학습자가 가장 많았다. 3) 교양 일본어 수강생들은 언어의 4기능 가운데 말하기-듣기-읽기-쓰기 순서로 중요하다고 생각하고 있었으며 실제 [기초일본어1] 수업은 말하기, 듣기 중심의 회화 수업으로 운영되기를 희망하는 수강생이 가장 많았다. 4) 교양 일본어를 수강하는 많은 학생들은 일본어를 그다지 어려운 언어는 아니며 자신이 일본어 습득에 특별한 재능을 갖고 있지는 않지만 일본어를 잘 하고 싶다는 생각이 있는 만큼 매일 꾸준히 공부한다면 2년 이내에 일본어능력이 향상될 것이라 인식하고 있었다. 5) 일본어를 일본에서 공부해야한다고 인식하고 있는 학습자 비율은 높지 않았으며 나아가 일본어를 공부하는데 일본인교사 및 일본인 친구가 필요하다고 인식하고 있는 학습자의 비율 역시 높지 않았다. 6) 일본어학습에 있어서 어휘 습득이 중요하다고 인식하는 수강생이 많았으며 일본어 학습방법에 있어서는 많이 반복하고 많이 연습하는 것/음성파일을 듣고 연습하는 것 등이 중요하다고 인식하고 있었다.
