The present study disentangled the genuine effect of verbal IQ as well as each of the control variables (age, gender, and race) on juvenile delinquency. A final sample size of 422, 10- to 12-year-old youths from the Children of the National Survey of Youth 79 secondary data were used. We employed a logistic regression analysis, reporting that the main independent variable, IQ, and two of the three control variables (gender and race) were predictive of juvenile delinquency. The current study took on great importance because it further extended our knowledge of the biological theory which emphasizes the effect of human biological characteristics on criminality. It should be noted, as one of the recommendations for future studies, that there is a continued need for research enabling us to identify better factors predictive of juvenile delinquency to develop more effective prevention strategies.

본 연구는 청소년비행에 대한 통제 변수인 나이, 성별, 인종과 언어지능지수(verbal IQ)의 효과를 로지스틱 회귀분석(binary logistic regression)을 통해 알아보았다. 원자료는 Children of the National Survey of Youth 79 (C-NLSY79)의 데이터로써 최종 10세에서 12 세 사이의 청소년들 422개의 표본이 사용되었다. 그 결과 주요 독립 변수 인 언어지능지수 (verbal IQ)와 통제변수인 성별과 인종이 청소년 비행에 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 최근 범죄학 연구는 생물학적 이론에 많은 관심을 두고 있으며, 인간의 생물학적 특성이 범죄성에 미치는 영향을 강조하고 있어 본 연구의 결과가 중요한 의미를 가진다. 추후과제의 권고 사 항 중 하나로서 청소년 비행 연제 예측을 위한 더 나은 요인을 파악하여보다 효과적인 예방 전략을 개발할 수 있는 연구가 계속 필요하다.
