First, it is appropriate to see the big vessel described in 「The Seventh Night」of 『Ten Nights of Dream』as a steamer, which foreigners and international students took to travel from and to Europe in the Meiji period. Second, we should see the young couple in 「The Seventh Night」of 『Ten Nights of Dream』 as the new generation, who had the education of western modern school after the birth of Meiji. They were playing the piano and singing a song they had learned from Japanese elementary school, showing no interest in others' business. Especially, the piano is considered as an instrument symbolizing the modern civilization like a steamer, since the piano didn't exist in Japan before the Modern Age. Third, in 「The Seventh Night」of 『Ten Nights of Dream』, the main character 「I」 saw that it would be better to be on the ship than to take his own life by leaping from it, even though he did not know where the ship was going. That reveals that there was no other way but to live, embracing the contradiction, conflict, anxiety and darkness of the Modern age, however uneasy and hard it was for him to accept the society, which was becoming modernized and westernized.
