In the age of diversification, contemporary ceramics has become so diverse that it is difficult to predict its potential. Under such circumstances, it is very difficult to derive the contemporary trend, but it is necessary to summarize the constantly changing aspects of contemporary ceramics and its modernity. In this study, the tendency of contemporary ceramics are analyzed, centering on contemporary ceramics in the United States where the modernity of ceramics came into being. After the 1950s, the trend of contemporary ceramics in the United States, which had produced various forms and discourses, was present by ceramic theorists since the 2000s. From US theorists Mark Del Vecchio, Matthias Ostermann and Susan Peterson to British theorist Emmanuel Cooper and Jo Dahn, recently proposed contemporary ceramics trends and case artists are summarized and the similarities and differences of each theory are extracted. Based on this, the tendency of contemporary ceramics in the United States are reclassified into a total of five types as archetypal transformation, figurative, abstract, installation and interaction with performance, and the works of related artists are substituted as examples of trend category. This study will contribute to the analysis of contemporary ceramics trend in a multifaceted perspective where such trend research will be conducted in the future.

다원화 시대에 현대도예는 방향을 가늠하기 어려울 정도로 다각적인 면모를 보이고 있다. 이러한 상황에서 동시대적(Contemporary) 경향을 총괄적으로 체계화하기는 어렵지만, 제작과 이론적 발전 양상을 동시에 비교 분석하여 현대도예의 다변화에 대해 주목할 필요가 있다. 본 연구는 도예의 현대성이 가장 먼저 시도된 미국 현대도예의 2000년대 이후의 경향을 분석한다. 1950년대 이후 다양한 양식과 담론을 생산하던 미국 현대도예의 경향은 2000년대 들어 도예 이론가들에 의해 문헌으로 정리되고 제시되었다. 따라서 객관적인 경향의 제시를 위하여 이론가 마크 델 베키오, 수잔 피터슨, 매티어스 오스터만과 최근 경향을 제시한 영국의 이론가 엠마누엘 쿠퍼, 조 단의 서적에서 제시된 현대도예의 경향들을 분석하고, 각 경향들의 유사점과 상이점을 추출하였다. 이를 토대로 미국 현대도예의 경향을 전형성의 변용, 구상, 추상, 설치, 퍼포먼스와 관객참여 총 5가지의 유형으로 재분류하고, 미국 현대도예 작가들의 작품을 대입하여 각 경향별 특성을 도출함으로써 미국 현대도예의 경향을 제시하였다.
