Most of the previous studies in Korea's petrochemical industry are virtually related to engineering, and some management studies have been based on static or retrospective analytic models. However, in order to analyze the actual competitiveness of individual items or specific corporations, it is necessary to extract competitive factors from dynamic perspectives and look at changes in the competition and see if these competitive factors can be applied in the future. Korea's petrochemical industry has been vulnerable to global oil prices, and the domestic market is much smaller than major countries. Also, production technologies and operational skills were significantly insufficient. Nevertheless, nowadays the Korea's petrochemical industry has grown rapidly to the 4th place in the world. In this regard, it is worth examining what has driven the development of the Korea's petrochemical industry. This study analyzed the key drivers in each phase of development of it, from the perspective of STEPPER. In the early stages, the influence of Political, Economic and Resource factors was the most affected, while Environmental and Technological factors were relatively unaffected. However, as the stage progresses, the technology became the most important factor. As the significance of the Environment began to grow rapidly from 4th stage onwards, it became the most important factor in the 5th stage.

우리나라 핵심 기간산업인 석유화학산업을 대상으로 한 선행연구들이 대부분 공학 관련 연구들이고, 일부 경영학적 연구들은 M. Porter의 다이아몬드 모델 또는 무역특화지수 등 실적 통계를 활용하는 정태적인 분석모델을 활용한 연구들이 주류를 이루고 있다. 따라서 개별 품목과 기업단위에서 경쟁력을 분석하는 데는 한계를 가질 수밖에 없고, 일부 기업을 대상으로 하는 민간 컨설팅 외에 국내 석유화학산업 전반 및 개별 품목 차원의 경쟁력 분석에 대한 연구는 부족하였다. 이러한 측면에서 본 연구는 우리나라 석유화학산 업 발전을 위한 국가정책 또는 기업차원의 미래전략을 수립하는데 필요한 경쟁요인들을 추출하고 변화과정을 살펴봄으로써 이러한 경쟁요인들의 미래 적용 가능성도 조망하고자 하였다. 본 연구는 기초원료를 수입에 의존할 수밖에 없는 우리나라 석유화학산업이 국제 유가 변동에 취약하고, 내수시장 규모도 미국, 중국, 일본 등 경쟁국에 비해 크게 협소할 뿐 아니라 애당초 기술이나 운영능력 등 제반여건이 취약하였음에도 불구하고, 우리나라 석유화학산업을 세계 4위 수준으로 성장시킨 핵심동인을 산업발전 단계별로 사회 (Society), 기술(Technology), 환경(Environment), 정치(Politics), 인구(Population), 경제(Economy), 자원(Resources) 등 7개의 관점에서 분석하고 미래 적용 가능성에 대해 전망하고자 한다.
