This article focuses on SHIRATORI Seigo, investigating his poetic intention as a representative of ‘the Grass-roots poets’ (民衆詩派). It presents material from the magazine titled ‘The Earthly Paradise’ that was edited by Shiratori and others. Broadly speaking, little attention has hither to been paid to individual poets of ‘the Grass-roots poets’ circle (民衆詩派). To date these poets have merely been regarded as mass writers lacking individuality, with their thematic subject and expression being merely prosaic in nature. Deviating from this point of view, this paper intends to re-evaluate the sense of responsibility they had as poets who spoke for the citizenry, to highlight the uniqueness of their fighting spirit under the restrictions of wartime. The research attempts to probe the extent to which Shiratori was aware of internationalism against the background of the First and Second World Wars, as well as the extent to which he tried to harmonize with society. This study explains Shiratori’s interest in the literary tidal currents of the age, and elaborates on his efforts to collect folk ballads of local regions in Japan, Korea and China in order to versify them in his adopted capacity as representative of ‘the voice of the people’.

본 논문은 민중시파(民衆詩派)를 대표하는 시인인 시라토리 세고(白鳥省吾)를 연구대상으로 하여, 그가 주제한 잡지 『지상낙원(地上楽園)』과 그 외의 자료들에 대한 검증을 통해 그의 시적 의도를 찾아보고자 한다. 종래의 민중시파의 시인들에 대한 평가는 그 주제나 표현이 평범하고 대중적이며 몰개성적이라는 이미지가 농후하다고 하면서도, 각각의 시인들의 작품이나 시인으로써의 사명감 등에 대해서는 주목하지 않았다. 본고에서는 지금까지 다루어오지 않았던 자료들을 검토하고, 전쟁이라고 하는 제한된 시대를 살아간 한 사람의 시인이 가졌던 독자적인 세계를 검증해 보았다. 시라토리 세고는 제1차세계대전에서 제2차세계대전으로 이어지는 두 전쟁을 배경으로 사회와 어떻게 융합하는 형태로 시의 창작에 몰두했을까? 1918년 반전시 『살육의 전당(殺戮の殿堂)』을 어떤 배경 속에서 썼으며, 그 후로도 전쟁을 노래하는 것을 어떻게 자각하였으며, 전시 중에 집필이 어려워진 가운데 어떻게 애국시를 썼을까? 본 논문에서는 시라토리 세고가 얼마나 동시대의 국제적 문학 조류를 의식하였고, 어떠한 시대상황 속에서 일본, 한반도, 만주의 민요 수집에 열의를 보였는지, 이를 「민중의 목소리」로 표상시키고자 의식하면서 전쟁 기간을 보냈는지에 대해 검증하였다.
