Confusion between a Parficle Existence Plane ni and Range and Attributive de: The Case of Korean-speaking Learners of japanese at the 'middle intermediate lavel'
This study aims to investigate one of the steps of the developmental sequence of a particle existence place ni by persons learning Japanese. This paper investigates the use of the particle de instead of ni in phrases such as Hoka no kankokujin no naka de ita (Okada & Hayashida, 2007) by intermediate-level learners of Japanese. We suggest that de is used in this way due to confusion between the existential locative particle ni and the range and attributive particle de (Daigaku de dare to naka ga ii desu ka). This error is therefore different from the one made by beginner-level learners, who over generalize the use of the locative particle de (which is normally used for action verbs) by extending its use to static verbs (which normally take the existential locative ni). First, we used the particle choice test for intermediate-level second language learners of Japanese. The results showed a“U-shaped development”when knowledge of the use of ni is acquired. Speakers from the lowest intermediate level used de in the manner under investigation. Next, we investigated Chuui-level (middle intermediate level) learners, native Chinese speakers who were learning Japanese (Okada, Shimizu, & Ii, 2012). This time our investigation concentrated on native Korean speakers. This study used regression analysis to study Korean-speaking learners of Japanese at the‘middle intermediate level’. The target variable was the percentage of answers using de instead of ni in an existential sentence with a numeral/ collective noun (Ryou ni amerika no hito ga imasu ka.), as well as in two existential sentences (Shokudou ni wa dare mo imasen. Shokudou no soto ni Isan ga imasu.). The descriptive variable was the percentage of correct answers containing the range and attributive particle de, and the percentage of correct answers containing the locative particle de. The results were found to be the same for both learners. The percentage of correct answers containing the locative de was not found to be significant, but the percentage of correct answerers containing the range and attributive de was found to be significant when two regression equations were used. The results strongly suggest that this incorrect use of de for ni by intermediate-level learners is due to confusion with the range and attributive particle de.
