In the revised 2009 curriculum, the Japanese curriculum committee for middle schools indicated its desire to find ways in which to communicate comprehensible information about Japanese culture. The committee also wished to present the cultural similarities and differences between Korea and Japan in context. In line with this plan, this paper analyzes the following aspects of learning culture from five types of Japanese textbooks currently being used in middle schools: (1) whether the desired learning culture has been applied to the dialogues and (2) whether cultural issues uniquely associated with Korea have been presented in the dialogues in each chapter, in the dialogues in each chapter's main cover, or in the pictures. For (1), it was found that the textbooks writers succeeded in consciously addressing ways in which to comprehensibly communicate and express Japanese culture. It was found that the learning culture had been applied in the dialog in 50~75% of each chapter depending on the textbook. For (2), in all textbooks, most of the main cover of each chapter reflecting the learning culture was found to present the difference between Korea and Japan. However, two different approaches to presenting these differences could be identified. The first type actively presented the differences with Korea through the dialogues between characters, whereas the second type presented them passively. In the textbook which followed the most active approach, the characters mentioned cultural differences in all of the dialogues reflecting the learning culture. On the other hand, in the textbook which presented the differences most passively, more than two thirds of the dialogues in question did not mention cultural differences at all. When learning about culture, understanding the similarities along with the differences is important. Thus, it is desirable for textbooks to reflect culture in their dialogues or their cover pages in future.

2009개정교육과정에는 중학교 일본어교과서에서 ‘(문화를) 의사소통상황에 적용해서 이해·표현’하고, ‘한국과 일본의 공통점과 차이점을 인식할 수 있는 내용’을 제시한다는 지침이 게재되어 있다. 이 지침에 따라 본고에서는 현재 사용되고 있는 5종류의 중학교 일본어교과서에 대해 학습문화가 ①다이얼로그에 적용되어 있는가 ②다이얼로그나 표지의 대화와 이미지(사진·일러스트)에 한국과의 차이점이 제시되어 있는가를 분석했다. ①에 관해서는 교과서에 따라 50~75%의 과(課)에서 학습문화가 다이얼로그에 반영되어 있어 ‘(문화를) 의사소통상황에 적용하여 이해·표현’하는 것을 집필자가 어느 정도 의식하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. ②에 관해서는 교과서마다 차이를 보였다. 우선 표지에서는 어느 교과서나 학습문화를 반영한 대부분의 이미지에 차이점이 나타나 있었다. 그러나 다이얼로그(대화)에서 등장인물의 발화를 통해 한국과의 차이점을 표현하는데 있어서는 적극적인 교과서와 그렇지 않은 교과서로 양분되었다. 가장 적극적인 교과서에서는 문화를 반영한 모든 다이얼로그에서 등장인물은 차이점을 암시하는 다소의 발언을 하고 있었지만, 가장 소극적인 교과서에서는 문화를 반영한 다이얼로그의 2/3이상의 과에서 차이점에 관한 발화가 전혀 이루어지지 않았다. 후자에서는 ‘(문화를) 의사소통상황에 적용하여 표현’하는 것과 ‘공통점·차이점을 인식할 수 있는 내용’을 제시하는 것을 융합해서 해석할 필요가 있다.
