This work is a survey of the history and characteristics of Seonhakwon in the contemporary times. Previous studies on understanding Seonhakwon and its history have dealt with its incorporation, development and ideology. However, these works only concerned with the history of Seonhakwon under the Japanese imperialism. That is, there rarely exists research concerning the period after the independence and contemporary times that follow. An imbalance of historical awareness raises many problems regarding historicity, objectivity and universality. Recently, a serious conflict erupted between the Jogye Order and Seonhakwon concerning ‘Act on the Establishment and Operation of Public Interest Corporations.’ In the course of this conflict, the two parties engaged in litigation, mostly centering on the question of the identity and direction of Seonhakwon. The Buddhist institute, at that time, intensively promoted its status as purified Buddhism and national Buddhism. However, by doing so, it interpreted the history arbitrary for its own interest. The arbitrary understanding of the history has revealed a severe problem. After all, the history and ideology of Seonhakwon should also be understood in the same line with historical flow and activities based on factual data. For this reason, the need for a historical survey of Seonhakwon in the contemporary times is evident. This survey, which finds its justification from this need, covers the period stretching from the end of the Purification Movement to the early 1990s. The problem of Seonhakwon has been tabled for several times as one of the agenda between the Jogye Order and Seonhakwon since the emergence of the Reformative Order in 1994. A resolution was reached between the two in 2002 to develop a consensus on the historical understanding and mutual line of course. In this regard, the contemporary history of Seonhakwon, which is the topic of this study, can be appreciated from the perspective of having an objective eye for the problem of Seonhakwon. This study is expected to serve well as a reference for a balanced interpretation of Seonhakwon’s operation, characteristics, and its relationship to the Jogye Order.

본 고찰은 현대기 선학원의 역사와 성격을 정리한 글이다. 지금껏 선학원의 이해 및 역사는 선학원의 창립, 전개 과정 및 이념을 서술하면서도 일제하 선학원의 역사만을 다루었다. 즉 해방 이후부터 현재까지의 역사 탐구에는 소홀하였다. 이런 불균형의 역사인식은 역사성, 객관성, 보편성이라는 측면에서 많은 문제를 노정시킨다. 최근, 최근 조계종과 선학원 간에는 ‘법인법’을 둘러싸고 치열한 갈등을 전개하였다. 그 과정에서 조계종과 선학원은 선학원의 정체성 및 진로를 놓고 법정 소송도 벌였다. 그래서 선학원은 정화불교, 민족불교라는 정체성을 강하게 홍보하였다. 그런 대응 및 소송 과정에서 나타난 문제는 선학원의 역사에 대한 자의적 해석이었다. 이와 같은 선학원 역사를 자의적으로 해석하는 흐름은 상당한 문제점을 노정시켰다. 요컨대 선학원의 역사와 이념도 자료에 근거한 역사적 흐름, 활동 속에서 이해되어야 한다. 그래서 현대기의 선학원에 대한 역사적 정리가 절대적으로 필요함이 제기되었다. 그래서 필자는 본 글에서 정화운동이 일단락이 된 이후부터 1990년대 초반까지를 다루었다. 선학원 문제는 개혁종단(1994)이 등장하면서는 선학원과 조계종이 수차례 회의 주제로 상정되었다. 그 결과 양측은 공통적인 역사 이해를 하고 공동적인 노선을 가기로 2002년에 합의하였다. 이런 측면에서 본고에서 다른 현대기의 선학원의 역사는 지금의 선학원 문제를 객관적으로 살필 수 있다는 관점에서 중요하게 인식할 수 있다. 본 고찰이 선학원의 근현대사 이해, 선학원의 운영과 성격, 조계종과의 상관성 등의 균형적인 해석에 참고가 되길 기대한다.
