By translating William Morris’ News from Nowhere, Sakai Toshihiko made a great impact on the whole society. This paper is written not only to introduce Sakai’s translation, but also to analyze its artistic value. Thus far, preceding studies have evaluated Sakai’s translation according to its contribution to the Japanese socialist movement and have merely emphasized the socio-economic aspect of Sakai’s translation. By shedding new light onto its contemporary discourses, this paper proves that various artists and novelists, who were not related to the socialist movement, paid great attention to Sakai’s translation, and wrote literary works under the influence of Sakai’s translation. Actually, “Risokyou,” Sakai’s translation of News from Nowhere, played a vital role in developing the utopian literature in Japan. In addition to stimulating the socialist movement, “Risokyou” presented new aesthetics which impressed many artists and writers. This paper compares renowned Tubouchi Syouyou’s literary theory with Sakai’s, and demonstrates that Sakai tried to defamiliarize both the actual and the ideal society. Sakai used his skillful translation of the description of the scenery in News from Nowhere to make the reader waver between the actual and the ideal society. This is a new perspective which enabled the reader to relativize the world and appreciate the aesthetics of “Risokyou.” This paper analyzes the aesthetics of “Risokyou” as well as its social impact.

사카이 도시히코는 모리스의 News from Nowhere를 번역하며 사회 전반에 큰 반향을 불러일으켰다. 본 논문에서는 사카이 도시히코의 번역을 소개하면서 또 한편으로는 그 예술적 가치를 분석하고 있다. 이제까지 선행 연구에서는 사카이 도시히코의 사회주의 운동과 관련해서 그의 번역 작품을 평가할 뿐, 그 미학과 형식을 본격적으로 다루지는 않았던 것이다. 본 논문에서는 동시대 담론들을 살펴보며 사카이 도시히코의 「이상향」으로 일본에 유토피아 소설 장르가 어떻게 정착되었는지를 조사했다. 사카이 도시히코의 「이상향」이 당시에 인기를 얻었던 이유는 그것이 사회주의 입문서로서 역할을 수행했을 뿐만 아니라 그 작품 자체가 풍부한 예술성을 지녔기 때문이다. 본 논문에서는 특히 그 「이상향」의 미학적 특성에 주목해 그 예술성이 구체적으로 어떻게 드러나는지를 분석했다. 먼저 쓰보우치 쇼요와의 비교를 통해 사카이 도시히코의 목적은 현실과 이상을 모두 상대화하는 것에 있다고 실증했다. 이는 「이상향」의 본문을 통해서도 잘 드러난다. 사카이는 원문의 아름다운 풍경 묘사를 적절히 번역하여 독자가 현실과 이상을 모두 낯설게 보게끔 만드는 것이다. 바로 이렇게 세상을 낯설게 보는 것에 사카이 도시히코의 번역 작품의 미학이 잘 나타나 있다.
