“East Asia” and Japan share a long history and a wide range of integrated culture. However, Imperial Japan and its wars transformed and complicated this relationship, causing further entanglements and overlaps. In many ways, defeated Japan has neither taken adequate responsibility for the war it waged, nor for its colonial rule, and frequent disputes over Japan's imperial legacy only add to these tensions. This paper focuses on Goto Meisei, who was born and raised in colonial Korea and who, in his numerous novels, reminisced over his boyhood and the memory of his father who passed away while being repatriated to Japan. The paper also reflects on his texts, including a narrative of his experiences and observations when revisiting Seoul. He provides a different viewpoint on the relationship between Koreans and Japanese people, with his observations, specifically those on language, revealing how former colonizers can encounter “the others” they have avoided facing due to their disavowal of the past.

역사적으로나 문화적으로나 오래동안 광범위하게 동아시아와 일본의 관계는 제국일본의 군사주의와 전쟁에 의해 보다 복잡하게 서로 얽히고 설키며 변화하였다. 그러나 패전 후 일본은 식민지주의 과거를 모두 청산했다고는 할 수 없으며, 그 유산을 둘러싼 논쟁은 종종 동아시아지역의 긴장을 만들어 내고 있다. 본 논문은 일본통치하의 조선에서 나고 자라 조선에서 보낸 소년시절과 귀국길에 잃은 아버지에 대한 기억을 이야기하는 수많은 소설을 쓴 고토 메이세이(後藤明生)에 초점을 맞추어, 전후 그가 처음으로 다시 방문한 서울 견문기 등의 텍스트를 분석하고 고찰하겠다. 조선과 일본의 관계, 특히 조선어와 일본어를 둘러싼 그의 자기관찰성은 식민지 지배의 과거를 부인하며 ‘타자’로서의 조선인과 서로 마주하지 못했던 예전의 식민자가 어떻게 그들/그녀들과 재회할 수 있는지에 대해 시사점을 던져준다.
