This thesis is a paper that summarizes how the employment of non-regular workers is expanded due to the economic recession in Japan and how young people's problems are drawn in contemporary Japanese novels from three perspectives. In Japan, ‘Freeter(フリーター)’ has emerged as a term to refer to young people who work part-tiem while working in the bubble economy. In the bubble economy period, they earned higher profits rather than those who worked full-time, and were regarded as one of the new lifestyles that allowed them to work freely without being caught in the workplace, but as the economic recession continued, the social perception of this Freeter has changed negatively. This social phenomenon was reflected in literature, and in modern novels, works that draw non-regular youths like Freeter have appeared from various perspectives. In the Japanese society, the representation of Freeter has changed with time in accordance with the changes in the economic market, but such a point of view is not immediately recognized in modern Japanese novels. In this paper, we propose three perspectives to look at non-regular workers such as Freeter. First, one perspective is to make the young people who continue to make a living by working part-time become an issue due to expanding the employment of non-regular workers, and to see their own responsibility for the problem they face. Another perspective is to recognize the expansion of non-regular employment as a social issue and to look at the problem of non-regular workers as a problem of social structure, the other perspective is to draw the story of the young people of the same generation from the viewpoint of young people with the neutral attitude. Through this, I could see the representation of Freeter in each work. In the modern Japanese novels, we could identify three perspectives dealing with the problem of irregular youth.

본 논문은 일본의 경제 불황으로 인해 비정규직 고용이 확대되고, 이로 인한 젊은이 문제를 현대 일본소설에서 어떻게 그려내고 있는가를 세 가지 관점에서 정리한 논문이다. 일본에서는 버블경제 시기에 아르바이트를 하며 생업을 이어나가는 젊은이들을 지칭하는 용어로 ‘프리터(フリーター)’가 등장했다. 버블경제기에 이들은 정규직으로 취업한 사람들보다 오히려 더 높은 수익을 올렸으며, 직장에 매이지 않고 자유롭게 일을 할 수 있다는 새로운 라이프스타일의 하나로 여겨졌지만 경제 불황이 길게 이어지면서 이 프리터에 대한 사회 인식은 부정적으로 변화하였다. 이러한 사회적 현상은 문학에도 반영되었으며 현대소설에서 프리터와 같은 비정규직 젊은이들을 다양한 관점에서 그려내는 작품들이 등장하게 되었다. 일본 사회에서 프리터의 표상은 경제시장의 변화에 따라 시기별로 변화를 보였지만, 현대 일본 소설에서는 그러한 관점이 즉각적으로 포착되지는 않고 있다. 이에 본고에서는 프리터와 같은 비정규직 젊은이들을 바라보는 데에 세 가지 관점을 제시하였다. 첫째는 비정규직 고용의 확대로 인해 아르바이트를 본업으로 삼아 생계를 이어나가는 젊은이들을 문제화 하고, 그들이 떠안게 되는 문제를 자기책임으로 보는 입장, 두 번째는 비정규직 고용확대를 사회문제로 인식하고 비정규직 젊은이들의 문제를 사회구조의 문제로 바라보는 입장, 그리고 마지막으로 중립적 태도로 젊은이가 겪게 되는 갈등과 고민에 초점을 맞춘 입장이다. 본 논문에서는 자기책임론의 관점에서 쓰인 소설로 『하류의 연회(下流の宴)』, 중립적 입장에서 쓰인 『8월의 길 위에 버리다(八月の路上に捨てる)』, 사회구조 문제론의 관점에서 쓰인 소설로 『메타볼라(メタボラ)』를 대상으로 하여 구체적으로 그 내용을 고찰하였다. 이를 통해 현대 일본소설에서 보이는 프리터 표상의 다양한 양상을 확인할 수 있었다.
