This article mainly discusses the continuation of the meaning and function of chotto, which is used both as an adverb and an interjection, by focusing on deriving its interjectional usage. The adverb chotto is typically used to express a small extent; however, depending on the context or syntactical conditions, it appears to have lost its original meaning and function as an adverb expressing a small extent. Especially, in evaluative or hortative sentences, chotto may also carry expressive value as a euphemism relating either to the speaker’s evaluation or their attitude and this adverbial usage of chotto is linked to its interjectional usage. The interjection chotto, which politely calls for the addressee’s attention, can be used on its own, in which case it is always separated by a pause or phonetic features from the other utterances with which it may co-occur. Nevertheless, in the event of co-occurrence with hortative sentences, chotto frequently appears at the beginning of an utterance, fulfilling not only an adverbial function as a euphemism, but also an interjectional function as an expression calling for attention. A characteristic that is common to both kinds of usage is speakers’ contextual use of chotto during discourse in which they are required to be considerate toward the addressees.

이 논문에서는 부사와 감동사에 걸쳐 사용되는 ちょっと에 관하여 부사적용법과 감동사적용법간의 연속성에 대하여 고찰하였다. 부사 ちょっと는 정도나 양이 적음을 표현하는 것이 기본적인 용법이나 사용 장면이나 구문적인 조건에 의해서는 반드시 정도나 양이 적음을 나타낸다고 할 수 없는 경우가 있다. ちょっと가 화자의 주관적인 평가가 드러나는 평가적인 문장이나 화자에게 어떤 행위의 실행을 요구하는 명령·의뢰·권유문과 같이, 화자에 대한 청자의 태도가 문제가 되는 문장에서 사용되는 경우, 화자의 평가·태도에 관련되어, 청자에 대한 배려를 의식한 완곡 표현으로서 기능하게 된다. 이와 같이 화자의 평가·태도에 상관하는 ちょっと의 부사적 용법은 감동사적 용법과의 연속성을 갖는다. 상대를 가볍게 부르는 말로서 사용되는 감동사적 용법의 ちょっと는 구문적인 위치와 음성적인 특징에서 후속하는 문장과 직접적인 관계를 맺지 않음을 나타낸다. 특히 명령·의뢰·권유문에서 사용 되어 문두에 위치하는 경우에는 상대에 대한 행위 요구의 정도를 완화하는 부사적으로도, 상대를 가볍게 부르는 감동사적으로도 기능한다고 볼 수 있다. 부사적용법과 감동사적용법은 발화 장면에 존재하는 화자에 대한 청자의 태도에 관련하는 점에 있어 근본적으로 공통점을 갖는 다고 할 수 있다.
