This study investigated the origin, conjugation, conjunction, and semantics of the auxiliary verb ‘Mashi’ on the basis of the results of previous studies. The word originated as an adjective of the verbal suppositional auxiliary verb ‘Mu’ and is considered to have formed with the conjugation of the line of ‘Ka’ and the line of ‘Sa’ with the past auxiliary, ‘Ki’ and the adjective. In conjugation, the use of ‘Mase’ is restricted to temporal and purposeful usage, for example, the forms Mizennkei․Izennkei of ‘Masika’ are acknowledged, and the form Rennyoukei is also common. In general, conjugation is predominantly used with the expression of conditionals. The conjunction connects Mizennkei of conjugations, but is mainly used as connections with ‘Rahenngata’ conjugations. The meaning of a conjunction forms a close relation with the form of grammatical construction. It expresses the only unreal or imaginary within past conditionals in absolute cases, which is on the basis of unreal conditionals, but expresses the meaning of yearning wishes, regret (pity), and suitability, not only separately, but also in a comprehensive sense. Therefore, it is desirable to regulate comprehensive meanings, because they include the general meaning. Usage of the conjunction to convey hesitation (or guessing), which seems to be emphasizing the usage of unreal conditionals also occur occasionally. Nevertheless, when the grammatical construction changes, the meaning that is conveyed is considered to be that of simple guessing.

助動詞マシ의 어원·활용·접속·의미에 대하여 고찰해 본 결과，어원은 동사적인 추량의 助動詞ム가 형용사화한 것으로, 過去助動詞キ 및 형용사와 같이 カ行과 サ行의 두 行이 혼합되어 형성된 것으로 추정된다. 활용은 未然形․終止形․連体形․已然形이 인정되며, マセ는 사용시기와 용도에 제한이 있었고, マシカ는 未然形․已然形이 인정된다. 활용형 중 連体形의 용례가 가장 많았으며, 전체적으로 가정조건문에서 사용된 경우가 압도적으로 많았다. 접속은 활용형의 未然形에 접속하나, 그 중에서도 ラ変型活用語에 접속한 용례가 다수 보이는 점이 주목된다. 의미는 구문형식과 밀접한 관계가 있으며 A반실가상․B의지․C(단순한)추량으로 분류되며 거의 대부분이 가정조건형식의 문에서 A의 의미로 사용되었고, B와 구문변화에 의한 C의 용례가 소수 존재하는 것으로 파악된다.
