This study aims to suggest spiritual practices in order for the Korean church to unite with God’s will. The Korean church has practiced some spiritual disciplines, such as revival, early morning prayer, Friday night prayer service, Bible study, and QT (Quiet Time). Yet, the Korean church fails to produce spiritual fruits, including members’ character development and service to the community. As a result, the Korean church is experiencing a spiritual crisis. In order to offer suggestions, I first explore the spiritual disciplines presented in the Scripture, since the Bible is the primary text for the spiritual discipline of believers. I examine the research of John Barton and Rolf Knierim to review what the Old Testament scholars say about spirituality in the Old Testament. For the New Testament, I compare the research of C.P.M. Jones and Bonnie Thurston. Based on their research, I conclude that in the OT the union of God’s will and the church is executed through the Torah, and in the NT it is through the Holy Spirit. Most authors of the OT repeatedly emphasize that the believers must read the Torah repeatedly throughout the day in order to not only discern the will of God but also follow it in their concrete lives. Meanwhile, the writers of the NT commonly stress that believers can be united with God’s will and practice it in the presence of the Holy Spirit. The Korean church rapidly grew until the 1980s due to the intense practice of two particular forms of spiritual discipline: Bible study and prayer. Surprisingly, this is very similar to the spiritual disciplines described in Scripture. The Korean church, however, has been rapidly decreasing since the 2000s, even though believers still practice the same spiritual disciplines. Consequently, I suggest two ways to overcome this challenge. First, the church’s growth in terms of its membership should not be the first priority, despite the fact that the Korean church has mainly practiced spiritual discipline with the purpose of church growth. Instead, the transformation of believers in their characters and lifestyles into that of altruistic love should be the primary goal. Second, a greater emphasis should be placed on remaining within the Spirit before believers try to apply the truth in their lives. Tangible application in the world is crucial in QT, so believers who often do QT commonly plan the application portion as the main goal of their QT. However, we need to understand that the love of agape is “not from us but through us,” as Jesus taught through the parable of the vine in John 15:1-17.

본 논문은 성령과 말씀 중심의 영성생활을 하는 한국교회가 영성의 열매를 보여 주지 못해 위기를 경험하는 현실에서 영성적 대안을 모색해 보기 위해 연구 되었다. 이를 위해 먼저 신자들의 영성 생활의 기본 교재인 성서에 나타난 하나님의 뜻과의 연합의 길을 고찰하였다. 연구의 토대로 구약과 신약에 나타난 영성을 연구한 네 명의 학자들의 주장을 검토하였다. 먼저, 구약에 나타난 영성을 연구한 바튼과 크니어림의 견해를 살펴 보았다. 그리고 신약에 나타난 영성을 연구한 존스와 서스턴의 견해를 고찰하였다. 그들의 견해를 바탕으로 구약과 신약에 나타난 하나님과의 연합의 길을 모색하였다. 구약성서의 전체에서 반복적으로 강조되는 영성훈련은 율법을 통한 길이었음을 제시하였다. 율법을 통한 하나님과의 연합의 길은 세 가지 의미를 지닌다. 첫째, 율법은 삶의 구체적인 상황에서의 하나님의 뜻을 분명히 계시한다. 둘째, 구약의 신자들은 율법을 묵상하고 종일 읊조리는 삶을 살았는데 이것은 끊임없이 무엇인가를 생각하는 사고에 적절한 일감을 부여하는 것이다. 셋째, 율법을 읊조리는 삶은 신자의 영혼에 하나님에 대한 사랑이 배양되게 하며 그 하나님에 대한 사랑은 율법에 순종하는 삶을 가능하게 해 준다. 신약성서의 전체에서 공통적으로 강조되는 영성훈련은 성령을 통한 길이었음을 제시하였다. 성령을 통한 하나님과의 연합의 길은 두 가지의 의미를 지닌다고 할 수 있다. 첫째, 성령은 신자의 생각과 마음을 깨우치고 감동한다. 둘째, 성령은 신자가 하나님의 사랑을 경험하게 하며 그 사랑의 힘으로 하나님의 뜻에 순종하는 삶을 살게 한다. 성령과 말씀 중심의 삶을 사는 한국교회의 영성생활은 구약과 신약에 나타난 영성훈련과 놀랍도록 유사한 것을 볼 수 있다. 하지만 한국교회의 영성생활은 성령의 임재 가운데 충분히 머무름을 강조하지 않기에 영성의 열매가 부족하다고 판단된다. 예수님의 포도나무 비유처럼 하나님의 임재 가운데 충분히 머무는 삶을 통해 성화와 이타적인 영성의 열매를 맺어야 할 것이다.
