Baktongsa is the typical textbook used for learning the Chinese at Sayeok-won in Choseon Dynasty. This conception have influenced on the research on the history of Korean Language. This had researchers pay attention to the fact that it was the textbook for the Official Interpreters. This reason the researchers did not pay attention to the purpose of compilation of Baktongsa. There were no researches why they need this kind of book, and who is the learner of it. That is the reason, This thesis aims to research the purpose of compilation of Baktongsa written in the Goryeo Dynasty. For this purpose, I researched the clothes, food, and shelters in Baktongsa. These cultural factors in Baktongsa detects the class of possible learners. The result of these research tells that the possible learners were the Korean lived in Daedo (大都), the capital of Won (元) Dynasty, especially like the Royal Family of Korea, noblemen, and eunuches etc. These men were the higher class for the late Goryeo Dynasty. Propriety of this research found in the documentaries of Goryeosa (『高麗史』), and Goryeosajyeoryo (『高麗史節要』). Lots of the Royal family of Goryeo lived in Daedo and they need to learn Chinese for many reasons, for example, the political bond and their living in Daedo.

『朴通事』는 조선의 司譯院에서 漢語 교재로 사용하였던 대표적인 책이다. 사역원의 대표적 한어 교재라는 인식은 국어사 연구에도 영향을 미쳐, 조선시대 한어 교재로서의 『박통사』에 연구의 초점을 두게 하였다. 그래서 정작 두 책이 처음 편찬되었던 고려시대의 편찬 목적은 별 주목을 받지 못했다. 고려에서 왜 이 책을 편찬하게 되었는지, 주요 학습 대상은 누구였는지에 대한 연구는 거의 이루어진 바가 없다. 이에 본고에서는 고려 당시의 편찬 목적에 대해 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 먼저 『박통사』에 나타나는 의식주 문화의 양상을 살펴, 이 책이 목표로 한 학습 대상을 추출하였다. 의식주 영역은 외국어 교재에서 교육 대상 학습자를 추정할 수 있게 해 주는 가장 대표적인 내용 요소이기 때문이다. 분석 결과 『박통사』의 학습 대상이 원나라 대도에 장기 체류하는 고려인, 그중에서도 왕실 사람이나 귀족, 관료와 같은 상류층, 그리고 元 황실의 환관 같은 황실 관계자였을 것으로 추정하였다. 그리고 『高麗史』, 『高麗史節要』 등의 史料를 살펴 이러한 주장의 타당성을 확보하였다.
