Translation of a Comparative Vocabulary of the Chinese, Corean, and Japanese Languages printed in Batavia, 1835 was known to academia earlier, but there are quite a few opaque points about the establishing process and bibliography of the book. Due to these ambiguities, the characteristics of the book have not been fully understood in the context of its own time. We could find some facts below from analysis of the book focusing on bibliographical matters. ① Contrary to the literature, the parts of the book known as printed by xylography are printed by stone lithography. ② ‘Philo Sinensis’ is the pseudonym of Gützlaff and given the establishing process of the book, his influence on the process of translation was considerable. ③ ‘偉’ in the title of the book ‘朝鮮偉國字彙’ is more likely to be selected for avoiding the denigratory meaning of ‘倭’ and preferring to the same pronunciation. ④ The original books for the translation, or Wae-eo Yuhae (倭語類解) and Chōsen Senjimon (朝鮮千字文) are housed at England and France respectively. The material characteristics of the book which can be understood from the preface and the organization of the book are as follows. ① The target reader of the book is a student who is Chinese or Westerner and interested in learning Korean language for missionary. ② ‘English Index’ of the book is not a lexicon for learners of Korean but just an index considering historical and social contexts of the time.

1835년 바타비아에서 간행된 대역 어휘집 『조선위국자휘(朝鮮偉國字彙)』의 존재는 비교적 일찍부터 학계에 알려져 있었다. 그러나 이 책의 성립 과정이나 서지에는 불분명한 점이 적지 않다. 게다가 이 책의 자료적 성격 또한 당시의 맥락에서 파악되지 못하였다. 이러한 문제의식을 바탕으로 먼저 서지사항을 중심으로 이 책을 검토한 결과, 다음과 같은 사실을 확인할 수 있었다. 첫째, 선행연구에서 목판으로 인쇄되었다고 한 부분은 사실 석판으로 인쇄된 것이다. 둘째, 이 책의 저자명으로 귀츨라프의 필명인 ‘Philo Sinensis’가 쓰인 것은 간행자인 메드허스트가 귀츨라프의 도움을 높이 사고 스스로를 ‘번역자’로 겸양해서인 듯하다. 셋째, ‘朝鮮偉國字彙’의 ‘偉’는 ‘倭國’의 ‘倭’에 담긴 폄하적인 의미를 피하여 고른 것으로, ‘倭’와 발음이 같다고 생각한 다른 글자일 가능성이 크다. 넷째, 이 책의 번역 대본(臺本)인 『왜어유해(倭語類解)』와 『조선천자문(朝鮮千字文)』은 각기 영국과 프랑스에 소장되어 있다. 다음으로 편찬자가 남긴 기록과 구성을 통하여 알 수 있는 이 책의 자료적 성격은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 편찬자가 상정한 이 책의 독자층은 선교를 목적으로 한국어 습득에 관심이 있는 중국인 또는 중국어와 한자를 기본적으로 습득한 서양인일 것이다. 둘째, 기존 연구들이 ‘영-한 대역 어휘집’으로 취급해 온 것은 당대의 관점에 따라 ‘영문 색인’으로 파악하는 것이 온당하다.
