This research aims at examining the educational effect in the music curriculum in Korea according to the educational demand of the recent diverse changes in the society whether musical education in Korea can improve students’ competency and character. As for the study method, literature research was mainly conducted, and with regard to the research contents based on it, first, the meanings of competency-based education emphasized nowadays and Character Education as the core competency were investigated, second, the contents related to competency and Character Education in music curriculum so far were analyzed, and third, the characteristics of the current music curriculum centered on competency and Character Education were studied into. There are three indications of this research. First, it has been verified that cultivation of human emotions and characteristic through musical experiences have been suggested as the main goal and role of music education along with the goal of developing students’ musicality in the process of music curriculum revision so far. Second, these contents related to personality are being emphasized particularly in the section of the goals of music education, but it has also been proved that no specific musical activities connected to them are clearly suggested in the sections of ‘contents’, ‘teaching and learning methods’, and ‘evaluation.’ Third, according to the changes in the music curriculum, nurturing students’ competency was not a main goal of music education, but the elements relevant to it has been reflected a lot so far, in the present curriculum revised in 2009 in particular, the contents related to competency have been found to be mentioned substantially.

본 연구는 첫째, 현재 강조되고 있는 역량중심교육과 인성교육의 배경에 대해 알아보고 둘째, 그 동안 음악과 교육과정에 나타난 역량 및 인성교육과 관련된 내용들을 살펴보며 셋째, 역량과 인성 교육을 중심으로 한 현행 음악과 교육과정의 특성을 조망해 보고자 한다. 본 연구를 통해 얻을 수 있는 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 음악과 교육과정의 변화에 따라 역량과 관련한 내용은 음악교과에 있어서 주요 목표는 아니었지만, 그동안 음악과 교육과정에서는 역량과 관련한 요소들이 상당 부분 반영되어 있으며, 특히 현행 2009 개정 음악과 교육과정에서는 역량과 관련한 내용들이 상당히 많이 진술되어 있는 것을 알 수 있다. 둘째, 그동안 음악과 교육과정이 개 정되어 오면서 음악교과에서는 음악성 계발을 위한 목표와 더불어 음악경험을 통한 인간의 정서와 인성 함양을 음악교육의 주요한 목표와 역할로 제시하여 왔음을 확인할 수 있다. 셋째, 이러한 인성 과 관련된 내용들은 음악과의 ‘목표’ 항에서 특히 강조되고 있지만 ‘내용’과 ‘교수․학습 방법’, ‘평가’ 항에서는 이와 연계된 구체적인 음악적 활동은 크게 드러나지 않고 있는 것도 확인할 수 있다.
